Not naming the accuser in situations like this is probably Eagle policy - so don't lay that on Sullentrop.

The person who reviews court records probably didn't recognize Gene's name as being a public figure at first. I think that's a more logical explanation than Schaus tried to keep it under wraps.

If any news source in town would have picked this up when the order was filed it would have been out immediately. That should give you some idea of how news services take TRO's or PFS's. Not significant enough to check them regularly and cross-check the names to a list of public figures.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

I am curious to hear your explanation of "somebody of the profile of Gene". If you're going to worry about the "profile" of a WSU coach, Marshall seems much more emotional than Gene. Chris Lamb gets pretty worked up too. Any good WSU coach (and I think they are all good) will be care deeply about their sport and their players and this is appropriate. The extent to which they display this emotion will vary but all WSU coaches should be full of passion; I want coaches who hate to lose.

Is this serious or a joke? Not that it matters since an attorney represents her/his clients (within limits); someone who played for WSU might decide not to take the case, however.

          [humor]There is no case since the internet says "b. 14 October 1753, d. 4 July 1820"[/humor] :innocent:

This is a serious issue but we essentially have no information. I have mixed feelings about even discussing the issue but it will be discussed in some forums; SN seems like a natural place for such a discussion. I expect Eric Sexton to stay out of this until a conclusive decision is reached; if Eric makes an incorrect decision, he will have no creditability in the future. (Who was the AD that "fired" Mike Pressler? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,258969,00.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Pressler What creditability does Duke president Richard Brodhead have now? http://www.amazon.com/Its-Not-About-.../dp/1416551468)

Another issue programs are going to use against us during the recruiting wars. "You don't want to play for Gene, remember the bean ball incident, remember when he left to OU and came back, now he's being accussed of stalking". This certainly is going to sway one important recruit sometime down the line don't you think?

KC Shox: We'll never know. A potential recruit might look at this and say "No Thanks" while another potential recruit might look at NCAA violations and say "No Thanks" to OU. We don't need every recruit; we just need enough good recruits.

With these types of cases, isn't it very difficult to prove your innocence? Phone records nowadays are readily available and I would think one witness in he accusers favor would hurt a defendant really badly.

So with this being at least my thought, if this turns into a less than favorable ruling for Gene, what does Sexton do?

Sexton doesn't do anything... its not the universities business. Unless Gene violates a restraining order nothing illegal has happened and its his personal problem not the universities.

Actually, I think Sexton will do something. I think it will be made clear to Gene what will happen if the restraining order is violated or if there or any future inicidents of stalking or similar indescretions. My guess is that they would expect Gene to retire. However, I don't expect any details or specifics to be made public.

BTW if it is not the University's business why is it of such great interest on this message board? Does Gene's personal behaviour not reflect on or attach to the Unversity in any way? I'm not sure the fact that no cirminal charges are involved is all that relevant. The court of public opinion is where this matter is being adjudicated.

                      • 1972: There may be a "conduct" clause in his contract but otherwise I don't think it is the university's business. For one thing, it appears that these restraining order are extremely easy to get. (Maybe I can get one against telemarketers? ;-) ) The only fact I have seen is that this woman got a TRO against Gene. I would like to see some facts before determining my opinion of the situation.

Some people say Gene should be suspended until this "investigation" is over. (AFAIK there is no "investigation".) If this were the standard practice at universities, Bill Self might miss the NCAA tourney each year as a different individual gets a TRO against him each March. This could be a useful tactic. Do you see how silly is the opinion that Gene should be suspended?

Maybe I'm missing it, but where has this been said?

I do think Gene Stephenson is in a figure head position at WSU. WSU depends heavily on image. If he is found to have done things that are less than desirable, it is 100% relevant to his job at WSU.

That may be so but when Dr. Beggs gets flooded with phone calls it will be become a very public matter.

I say suspend him, put Kimnetz in charge and go on.

                              2. The MUW should be proactive and suspend Gene with pay until their own investigation is complete and shows that he didn't violate any provisions of his contract.
