  • Shocker Recruiting - Class of 2018

Thought I would start a new thread since we seem to be getting more info on the Class of 2018.

    From the Paxton Wallace thread:

    Paxton Wallace 6-1, 210 3B,1B, RHP

    Jake Bunz 6-4, 215 LHP

    Paxton Wallace

I went back to the archives on GoShockers under baseball to look at who signed LOI's in Nov 2016 & Paxton Wallace is one of them.

So that would make Paxton Class of 2017. Jake Bunz would be a Class of 2018 verbal commitment until he signs in November.

It seems over the past few days WSU has received three commitments from the same high school (Ronald Reagan Baseball - twitter) in San Antonio. Seth Morrow, Josh Killeen and Cal Carver.

        Josh Killeen @JoshKilleen6
I am honored and blessed to further my academic and baseball career at Wichita State University. #shockernation

Is there some canned lines that they give these guys to announce their commitments? I see the first two over and over, now the 3rd one was a little fresher.

Cal Carver - 86 mph fastball, Curveball 68-69

Josh Killeen - is under 6' tall

Seth Morrow - another player under 6' - evidently HCTB is listening to his critics. I did find a scouting report on Morrow from his time playing at the Little League World Series in 2012 - basically said he was a good player. Only real thing I could find is he has an exit velocity in the OF of 88mph.

Or there's not enough reasonably decent players over 6' that will come and fill out the roster. :playful:

Couldn't resist. I'm not being critical of any players here or recruited, thus, removing their names from the post.

I think what the Shocker fans really want are good ballplayers and competitors that can win. The size of the package is not important. If we were getting that with the bigger players HCTB has shown a preference for no one would care a bit. However, because that has not been the case it opens the door to second guessing about maybe passing over really good ballplayers who don't measure up to what seems to be an arbitrary standard. Whether that has really happened or not to any significant degree is hard to say.

National Champion Florida Gators had 10 players under 6' and another 7 listed right at 6'.

I believe HCTB's premise was flawed and added to his past failures. He was narrowing down his pool of possible players, thus, walking over better players from another available pool and having to take lesser players from his reduced pool.

Frankly, one just might find that smaller players may be more likely to play with a chip on their shoulder. It wasn't an arbitrary standard, it was a stupid standard.

Article on the verbal commitment of 3 guys from San Antonio Reagan plus list 7 other players from the Class of 2018 who have committed:

Jake Bunz, mentioned above, not on the list.

Miller Pleimann, 6-3, 180 RHP, Fayetteville, AR
Nice Showcase report from Feb 2017.

Calvin Marley, 6-3, 190 RHP/OF, Ft. Colling, CO
From the same high school as Codi Heuer.

David Van Vooren, 6-2, 180 OF/SS, Bedford, TX
Last guy with a Van V..... last name to matriculate at WSU wasn't too bad.

Cameron Hill, 6-1, 200 RHP, The Colony, TX

Adam Stephenson, 6-1, 170 OF, Southlake, TX
Bats L, Throws L - Max Preps lists him as #197 Nationally - Not sure how much that means

Jacob Plastiak, 6-2, 190 SS/2B, Tinley Park, IL

Matthew McWilliams, 6-4, 175 RHP, Lee's Summit, MO
                    Long and lean it seems

These 7 additional names meet HCTB's height requirement. Pretty difficult to say how good this recruiting class will be.

A couple of more verbal commitments to Wichita State. One is a Shocker Legacy.

                      http://www.kansas.com/sports/college/wichita-state/article165764662.html

Terry Elliott's son Cooper, is a 6-2, 165 lb left-handed hitting middle-infielder out of Andover Central.

Aaron Haase (not related to David AFAIK) out of Amarillo (TX) High has also verbaled. So far what I have seen on Aaron is that he is 5-8, 160 and is a middle infielder/RHP. A relative midget for HCTB.

Another Billy Hall kid. Plays on the same team as Isaiah Cohens & Garret Vandeventer who also committed to WSU.

Pretty ironic as well considering Terry was one of the pretty vocal pitchfork carriers during the coaching change.

Outfielder/pitcher Quinton Hall gave a verbal commitment to WSU today. He's a junior to be at Mill Valley

From what I can find he is Class of 2019. Is that correct?

                            http://www.prepbaseballreport.com/profiles/KS/Quinton--Hall-2498061573-4291387065

According to PBR that would be our 5th verbal commitment for the Class of 2019.

Lefty hitting catcher Quinten Albrecht (6-1, 165) out of Waterloo, IL (not Iowa) reportedly has committed to be Shocker.

                              Not finding much on him.
