  • Are The Shocks Better? 2016 vs 2017 Metrics

    Through 16 games

[Note: 2016 are full season stats, so significant changes for 2017 can be made if the team plays well (or bad) for significant period of time]

    2016 Non-Conference SOS: 52
    2017 Non-Conference SOS: 80

Commentary: To this point the schedule is slightly weaker but comparable.

    2016 Win%: 21-37 (0.360)
    2017 Win%: 10-6 (0.630)

Commentary: 2016 team was 5-11 at this point

    2016 Pythag Win%: 43%
    2017 Pythag Win%: 53%

Commentary: 2016 team underachieved by 3 games, while the 2017 team is over-achieving by 1-2 games.

    Offense:
    2016 RPG: 5.93
    2017 RPG: 5.63

Commentary: Offense is not better this year. Scoring is down -5%, power is down -46%. Average, OBP and SLG is all down respectively -7%, -5% and -10%. Teams is striking out more, walking less. Any improvement can be tied to the pitching staff. Need to hope the hitters can find some confidence and figure out to hit their "height potential".

    Pitching:

Commentary: In all metrics, the pitching is better. The improvements are double of what hitting is down. Team is ranked 146 in Team ERA. How bad were they last year? 222. But the reality that is not good enough. Pitching is better than 2016 so far, but the truth is they went from awful to mediocre.

It gets really ugly if you just look at the road games. Keep in mind these were pretty good teams, on the road, but it does give you a little extra perspective on how much we have beaten up on the really bad teams we've played at home.

Offensive numbers for the 7 road games:

      48-233 for a .206 average
Scored a total of 25 runs or 3.57/game
Only 7 extra base hits and all doubles (no triples or home runs)
      72 strikes outs for a 10.3 K/9

Thank goodness for that 5-run 9th against LSU when the game was over or the numbers for that series would be scary bad.

Being an optimist, I am still holding out hope for success in Valley play. I am also realist and acknowledge the weight of the task at hand.

It was a solid effort hiring Steele, but this team is too far off the deep end offensively.
