  • Eric Wedge and Charlie O'Brien

I found this comment in the article about Darren Baotright's ascension to permanent AD status kind of intriuguing:

He (Boatright) spent part of the summer wih former assistant baseball coach Brent Kemnitz, now working in the athletic development, addressing concerns about the baseball program with former Shockers such as Charlie O'Brien and Eric Wedge.

May just be some name dropping but, hopefully, they will be able to re-engage with some of the Shocker greats that helped to build this program. Perhaps make an attempt to at least repair some of the damage to the Gene Stephenson relationship.

If Butler does not win this year none of this will make any difference.

I feel like reconnecting with the very large and connected WSU baseball alumni is perhaps even more important if Butler does not win this year.

Makes one wonder what Wedge and O'Brien are up to these days. How does this sound as a proposal

        Wedge - Manager
        PO'Brien - Asst. Mgr.
        Kemnitz - Pitching coach

I think that lineup could probably get some decent recruits.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I really liked Kemnitz, but I have to believe that ship has sailed at this point.

I could see Brent coming back as pitching coach but right now he seems to really like his current gig and he may find out that suits him even better than coaching moving forward.

In any case, I really don't see how working on rebuilding any bridges needing repair is a bad thing.

The bridge that really needs repaired is the relationship with Gene. If you repair that one bridge, all the others will quickly be in good shape. I highly doubt that Brent can repair that bridge... I guess the part that concerns me is that we have to spend so many resources and so much effort repairing bridges.

What's especially disheartening about the situation with Stephenson is that, love him or despise him, he's indisputably one of the all-time great college baseball coaches, and the only guy to lead to WSU to a national championship in a D-1 NCAA sport (and I emphasize the "NCAA" part to distinguish him from Gordon Vadakin, who is to WSU bowling what Gene was to Shocker baseball, only more so -- but bowling is also not nearly so high profile a sport.)

Even if you attribute some or much of the breach between them to Gene's attitude, how sad is it that a school and its all-time most successful coach (again, in an NCAA sport) aren't on speaking terms?
