  • Joe Carter

What involvement, if any, has Joe Carter involved himself with WSU since he left?

Anecdotal comments on the Phog have me curious.

A little disappointing to hear his KU allegiance but:

    A) That might be some crowd pandering.

    B) It was a KU person who said that he said it, so there could be bias in remembering that story.

    C) Joe was from Lenexa(??) so I'd imagine that he followed KU as a kid.

    D) Because he was a Gene player, he might be soured on Shocker Athletics from Gene getting fired.

    E) Because he was a Gene player, he might not have a good impression of Gregg. It seems like I heard a story of friction between Gregg and Gene from the Johnny Coy situation.

Sounds like a recruiting violation to me.

Did some digging through his Twitter feed and found multiple KU references, but not a whole lot about Wichita State (there were a few retweets where WSU was mentioned, to be fair, but he has rarely mentioned WSU directly). Multiple mentions for Andrew Wiggins.

Seems disappointing, since he is the best baseball player in WSU history. My father was an RA in Fairmount in the early 80s, knew Joe, and speaks very highly of him. Look, he's a grown man and he can align himself with who he wants. But it is disappointing for whatever reason.

@WuShock16:, it looks like he was from Oklahoma City and went to high school there. Which makes some of this really puzzling.

Why didn't he play at KU then? I just never hear of him mentioned regarding any contributions to WSU since he left.

Fair enough. Upon further review, it was his wife who was from the KC area, and they made their family home in Leawood (I knew it was an L suburb). Thanks for the correction. I knew Kansas City fell in there somewhere.

Joe Carter made a major financial contribution in 1991 to help fund new locker rooms. I don't remember exactly how much he gave but it was at least $100,000. The WSU baseball locker rooms were named after him at that time. I am guessing that Joe, like many former players, were not happy with the way Gene was fired and have cooled off in their support for the program.

I believe he chose us over OU because we were going to allow him to play both football and baseball.

He received a full scholarship that way until he quit football.

Maybe but he was never a big Gene supporter either.

My memory is not as good as it used to be, so some of you who have better recall than I are open to correct me, I remember a situation where Joe had a relative maybe a nephew, that he wanted WSU to offer a scholarship. The coaches chose not to recruit him. I don't think he has had much connection with WSU since.

The nephew thing does sound familiar, but that's all. I did find this about a nephew that played in the minors. He was drafted out of high school and first year juco, but did not sign. Drafted again the following year, 12th round, and signed.

I know that Joe still connects with Gene. When the Royals played the Giants in the World Series, Jenn Bates mentioned seeing Gene and Joe tailgating together before Game 7.

Joe has always been a Stephenson family favorite. I thought Fred tried to play here but wasn't good enough.
