I think that the number of innings is totally irrelevant. 157 pitches in 10 innings is a very efficient outing (15 pitches per inning). It would be very easy for a pitcher to accumulate 157 pitches in 8 or 9 innings. The rule should be the number of pitches, not the number of innings.i This would probably be controversial but the proper way to go.

I agree that the number of innings is not nearly as relevant as the number of pitches and the guidelines and limit should be on that basis.
What we don't now is how many times does a high school kid throw 150 pitches in a 7 inning game. That would be perfectly legal under current rules.
I don't believe the Coach should lose his job over this. A suspension and education should be adequate for what seems to be a 1st time offense. He reportedly did ask the umpire about it who reportedly said it would be okay. If this is true perhaps a little education with the umps is in order as well.

Context does matter. What year in school is the player? Does he have any desire to play baseball beyond high school? If he's a senior with no aspirations, then who cares? There is very little risk and it may be more than worthwhile for him to try and win a state championship which could be the pinnacle of his baseball playing days forever.

Doesn't the transfer rule say that if a kid doesn't switch addresses that he is ineligible for the next semester at the varsity level?
Now if a student switches schools for an academic reason, i.e. for a class that isn't offered at their current school, i believe they are able to play right away. Maybe that was changed, but used to be that way.

This is from the KSHSAA handbook.
"Change in school is made without an accompanying move on the part of the student's parents - If students change schools without an accompanying move on the part of their parents, they will be ineligible for interschool extracurricular activities for eighteen weeks, beginning with the first day of their attendance."
There are some exceptions but if a student transfers without their parents moving to that school district, they can't play varsity sports for 18 weeks.
I also don't believe the kid should be suspended. Coach Hoover probably should. I also think it makes sense to go by pitch count instead of innings pitched.

With that said the situation is for the most part over. The KSHAA refuses to lift Colby's suspension and Jeff has worn this pretty graciously and has even offered to sit out the tourney if Colby could play the first game. We'll see if the KSHAA bother to do anything to the two pitchers who threw well over 120 pitches/10 innings in the game immediately before this one in question. (which is only talked about in hindsight)
