  • Shockers versus Jayhawks (May 17)

    http://goshockers.com/news/2016/5/16/baseball-kaiser-carlile-tribute-scheduled-for-may-17.aspx

Okay, so most people here are pretty much done with the season at this point...understandably so.

Might I give you one possible reason to go out to Eck tomorrow? WSU will be having a night to pay tribute to Kaiser Carlile, the batboy from Liberal who died in a freak accident at the NBC Tournament last summer. The players will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned during the game...proceeds doing towards a foundation benefiting Kaiser's family. The jerseys actually look pretty sweet. The bids start at $80, and if the crowd is not a huge one, you might be able to find a good deal on one of these jerseys.

Decent starting performance by Connor Lungwitz. Went 4.1 allowing 1 run on 3 hits. 3 K's and 1 BB. Threw quite a few pitches in the 1st two innings and came out with a pitch count of 85.

Shocks lead 4-1 at the end of 5.

So, I found the game on TV and turned it on just in time to see the Shox give up a 4-spot and now they're behind 5-4.

Dayton Dugas just cranked one out to tie it up! Man, I would like to have one of those hats...

I remember those years... Not too long ago. Looking forward to seeing them again very soon.

Shocks break a 7-game losing streak to KU. I can cheer for that.

Does Dayton Dugas (#25) at 6-3, 225 look like a stud ballplayer or what? I was worried about Dayton early in the season when he was striking out so frequently but he has really shown some nice improvement. He needs a lot of work on his defense but he seems like he is willing to put in the work.

Trey Vickers (#17) is probably the most valuable player on this year's team. His has been solid at the plate and in the field.

I think it's getting pretty fair to say there are some promising young hitters on this team. I'm not sure how many (if any) can play a lick of defense, but they have been putting up some runs lately. And yes, against mostly not great competition. If I think about a lineup next year, I could start to get a little excited. Like maybe they could put up 7 runs a game. But then if I think about the whole team, I'd guess they'd still get doubled up half the time.

Clearly the key to improving is the pitching. A good hitting team can overcome average to maybe even a little below average defense. But it is very difficult to overcome weak pitching.

7 games!!!??? Wow! That is incredible. I never have thought a lot of Ritch Price as a coach or KU as a baseball program. Yikes. That is a big indictment of Butler. Perhaps the biggest.
