Dayton has struggled at the plate so far but Alex Bohm has not. In fact, if Alex, a RH batter, keeps this up HCTB will have a tough time not inserting him in the lineup at 3B. Alec followed up his 2-run home run in yesterday's game with a 2-3, 2 RBI game today. One of his RBI's came on the out he made, a sharp grounder up the middle handled by the SS. He also made a very slick play in the field coming in to field a chopper on the short hop and then making a accurate throw to get the batter at 1st. He showed he could run a little bit as well on his double in the in the 8th. Surprisingly athletic for a "kid" who is 6-5, 240. Remains to be seen how his fielding will hold up.

Greyson Jenista, a LH batter, also looks like the real deal as well and also showed he can run pretty well for 6-4, 240 lb "kid".

The ball just seems to jump off of Alec Bohm's bat. I was thinking I might be seeing a right-handed version of Pat Magness. OTOH, Jenista, who bats left, may proved to be just as good. We will see. Small samples sizes and questionable competition but these two young men may resurrect the term Bookends at Wichita State except this time in the baseball program. Seniors Chase Rader at 3B and Zach Reding at DH better bring the goods because if they don't Alec and Greyson appear to capable of stepping in.

Redshirt freshmen Travis Young, Josh Debacker and Jordon Boyer plus true freshman Luke Ritter all held there own and certainly weren't overwhelmed.

3 true freshman pitchers each pitched an inning today. Clayton McGinness had an 8-pitch, 3 up and 3 down inning in the 6th. Robby Evans and Codi Heuer were kind of eratic as Robby walked 3 in his 7th inning stint and Codi walked 2 and had a wild pitch in his 8th inning stint. However, Robby struck out 2 and Codi struck out 3 and they both escaped without allowing a run. Codi Heuer in particular looked to me like he could be tough if he can pitch with command of the strike zone.

I really like the speed Young brings to the team.Add me to the list of people who are looking forward to Tuesday when the competition level steps up.These guys look the part so far.

Do you think Dayton is pressing? His bio says he was ranked as the 111th best player nationally, perhaps he's trying to live up to this expectation. UNC pitching isn't overwhelming, so maybe he's trying to start his season with a huge bang.

Dayton is another impressive physical specimen at 6-3, 225 so he fills his uniform out quite nicely. It is hard to say whether or not he is pressing at this point. From what I saw today it looked to me like he might be guessing too much especially with 2 strikes. Of his 5 at bats resulting in 5 strike outs 3 of them have been looking and 2 swinging. Could be he is being just a little be too selective at the plate looking for pitches he can pull maybe. Again hard to tell.

I think he should try a couple of things. One would be to perhaps attempt a bunt for a base hit. The other would be to try to take the ball up the middle or to the opposite field. Just focus on making solid contact. Then go from there. If he does keep striking out at this rate he no doubt will start pressing at some point.

mlb draft video says he swings and misses a lot and has trouble tracking. That if he can learn to make contact consistently he could be very good. So it might take some time with Dayton.

Willie Schwanke wasn't as sharp today as Sam Tewes was on Friday giving up 7 hits and 2 runs over 4 innings but he made the pitches when he really needed to.

The 5 relief pitchers who pitched one inning each (Seiwald, McGinness, Evans, Heuer & Biechler) deserve a pat on the back as they allowed no hits and no runs. The 5 walks in the 7th and 8th by Evans and Heuer mentioned above was no doubt a little irritating to Brent but he had to be pleased with the way those two freshmen battled through those issues to help hold the fort.

We haven't seen John Hayes yet primarily because both of these games have been blow outs. I would anticipate seeing him tomorrow even if the game gets out of hand again for no other reason than to let him get his feet wet and get in some live action work. Heard that he has picked up a couple mph on his fastball since last year and will be bringing it in the 92-94 range.

Also looking forward to seeing if Chase Williams can build on his strong finish to last season.

I'm excited about Bohm. Small sample size against a crap opponent, but I'd like to see more sample size sooner rather than later. He just looks balanced and confident in the box, his bat stays in the zone forever, and the ball jumps when he makes contact.

Was excited to see Young drop down a bunt. If he can handle the bat like that consistently (a talent this team hasn't had in what seems like 15 years), in combination with his speed, I'd be excited about his potential.

Fun day at the ballpark. Also excited to be 2 games in with 0 errors. Especially with all the funky substitutions.<br><br>I hope someone can pass Rader at 3B very soon. His defense is.....suspect?

Clearly there is some raw material to work with here. Can it be harnessed and molded as needed will be the challenge.

I'm willing to give Chase the benefit of the doubt on his defense until he proves otherwise. Last year he struggled with balance issues and light headedness due to an inner ear problem. I am assuming that is behind him at this point. However, I do question whether Chase is our best option at the lead off spot. The order looked kind of upside down today with Kirk, Young and Vickers going 6-9 plus a walk and no strikeouts. Chase has a tendency to strike out which he did twice today.

I agree with you on your point about Young's bunt. That was nice.

Outstanding start to the season. 0 errors in 2 games? I think last year we didn't even start out with 0 errors through 2 innings.

I'm out of town this weekend, but have been following along. Excited to see them slam the door tomorrow and bring it on Tuesday. Nice job Shox.
