White Sox Designate Conor Gillaspie For Assignment

By Zach Links [July 19, 2015 at 10:48am CDT]

The White Sox have designated Conor Gillaspie for assignment, according to Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com. The move will make room for Matt Albers, who was reinstated off the disabled list.

Gillaspie began the year as the White Sox’s starting third baseman, but rookie Tyler Saladino has since taken over at the hot corner. The 28-year-old has not been producing at the plate in 2015. So far this year, he owns a .237/.276/.364 slash line in 185 plate appearances. Last season, Gillaspie hit .282/.336/.416 in 130 games. For his career, Gillaspie owns a .258 .312 .393 slash line in parts of six MLB seasons. Although he has seen the bulk of his major league time with the White Sox, he did make varsity squad cameos with the Giants in 2008, 2011, and 2012.

Absolutely, Shurtz. I'm actually a White Sox fan, dating way back to the time when Al Lopez was manager, but they're not good and the Angels are. So a great break for Conor, and I hope it revives his season in some way. If nothing else, it's nice to anticipate being in the playoffs, which he wouldn't have been doing in Chicago.

CG #6 on SC Top Ten tonight. Diving snag and throw out of Price Fielder @ 1st. Pujols had an amazing stretch to pick the ball and tip toe the bag.

Saw Conor play last night against the Astros. He looked really good at the plate and had a couple nice hits.

Well, no doubt Conor underperformed significantly with Chicago this season, which is why the Sox no longer have him and don't seem to have looked back with any regret (although playing Boston can make anybody look good these days). But he's certainly off to an impressive start with the Angels both at the plate and in the field, as sometimes happens when a player gets a fresh start, and I hope he keeps on pushing right into the playoffs.

Wouldn't it be weird, though, if Bambino Gillaspie's Angels ended up facing the White Sox in the wild card game? It's hard to imagine, with Toronto, the world's least efficient team, being +100 in scoring differential while the Sox are -34. Still, the Sox are only 2 1/2 games out of the play-in (and just 1/2 game behind the Jays, who are also a bubble team at this point along with several others), so who knows?

                      That was fast.

Well, opens the door for the Royals to bring him in as they expand rosters down the stretch.

Somebody is going to give him a shot. He'll bounce around from team to team. But he wont be a Royal anytime soon.
