This news is a bit older (February) and I didn't see it reported here anywhere.

Another flamethrower. 83mph is going to scare the crap out of college hitters.

To be fair, that was from last August. It will be 2.5 years later before he'd throw his first pitch in a Shocker uniform. I bet his velocity will have increased by then.

He may also be coming in as a 1B. 6'3/200 is a good frame for a first baseman.

Also, according to Perfect Game, the average FB velocity for a 2016 player is 79mph.

Congrats to 3B Maison Stites (Lee's Summit North, 2016) on his commitment to Wichita State
              Latest eval from PBR:

Defensively, posted best infield velo at 86 mph, works through the ball, fluid footwork, quick release, over-the top, accurate throws.

I played some HS ball against both Joba Chamberlin and Pat Venditte - even had some success against them. Let's say they weren't touching 90 in HS and I think they've gone on to have some mild success as baseball players. As long as we're recruiting guys with the right body type, Kerry and Brent (or whoever the pitching coach is) will mold them into what they're capable of.

Looks like the 2016 class will be smaller than the 1st classes recruited by HCTB and will be heavy on pitching according to Paul Suellentrop's report.

You scoff, dizzle, but I don't know how many times over the years we've seen guys -- especially lefties -- who throw 83 but know where they're putting it absolutely baffle and frustrate even some of WSU's really good hitting teams. I'm not sure the notorious Charley Boyce was much over 83 after a couple hundred pitches or so, and he kept WSU out of a super once upon an unhappy time.

                          1. That hasn't been a great sign for our hitters.

                          2. We've heard a lot about getting big bodies that throw hard as a recruiting strategy of this staff. So far, I haven't seen it. Just finding it curious.

Nope. Of course, Kevin Hooper was a 1st Team All-American, so maybe size isn't everything.
