Look at the numbers. They were going downhill every year and the Butler had a quick spike (I guess people were enthused for one year) up before the quick spike even lower. I haven't been to a game since Gene left.

It would be better if the Gene Bashers simply wrote:
"We wanted to get back to the CWS, and felt Gene needed to retire. So instead of transitioning him out with a win/win situation with fanfare and appreciation, we took the biggest roll of dice in WSU sports history, threw Gene under the bus without even a thanks, and hired a replacement that failed miserably. The gamble failed."

It was so damn easy to predict-- unfortunately.
I'm just looking at the numbers. I went to fewer and fewer games each year and I haven't been back since Gene left. Things were better win/loss wise when Gene was here but it was losing support from the masses each year and we were no longer a Top 50 team with Gene.

The trend SB Shock posted does have a declining trend line with FHCGS. Part of that, I believe, was that there was higher start point, and a fandom unaccustomed to the Gene "struggles" of his last 3 years.
With Butler, the start point was fairly low to begin with ( though a slight bump did occur). It will be interesting to see what happens next year. It could really scrape the bottom. That negative downward turn is staggeringly concerning.

I can't see him lasting another year unless he gets the team to the NCAA playoffs.

I believe the quick spike was due to dirt cheap season tickets sold for the 2015 season. That kind of bump would not carry a commensurate revenue bump. That bump was a manufactured aberration and should be discounted as much as those season tickets deals were.

However, your point is valid. Attendance and season ticket sales were in a steady decline during Gene's final 5 years but that trend is more or less still in place with no signs of letting up. it will be interesting to see what next season attendance numbers will look like but an acceleration of the rate of decline is certainly a strong possibility.
