  • NBC and Recruiting

Have the Shockers ever successfully recruited a player, who played for an National Baseball Congress team?

I am referring to a player, who had not been recruited by the Shockers, prior to the start of the tournament.

I think we may have offered Isaiah Leon Jackson a scholarship but he was already committed.

      NBC Recruits

TJ Looney, a 6-6, 215 lb RHP, played for a NBC team last summer. He is originally from Canyon, TX, & he played one year st Seward CC before coming to WSU as a walk-on. He was pretty wild in the 2014 season, but was reported on SN to have had a great summer somewhere with a low ERA. Someone else reported that Brent Kemnitz gave him a different "arm slot" to master, & he appears to have done that.

Back in the good days of the early 90s WSU had a slugging first baseman from Oklahoma -- Jason somebody, maybe Smith, who attended Rose State JC (weird; I remember his junior college but not his last name, because Adams is what keeps coming to mind, and this Jason wasn't Adams). He had come out of nowhere, and I thought I read at the time that WSU first spotted him in NBC play, perhaps at the tournament.

Speaking of sluggers, WSU also had Toby Smith, a big strong two-way player who didn't pitch much for them because he was mostly a hitter, but who went on to try to make it as a pitcher in the pro ranks. Again, I vaguely recall (and perhaps incorrectly) that the Shocks recruited him largely because of his success in summer / NBC play. Maybe someone with a sharper memory and better research materials than I have while I'm traveling, as I am now, can help with these two.

Noah Booth was a late sign but I'm not sure if NBC-related.

Yes, Jason White was the guy I was thinking of -- thanks, Play Angry. For some reason I kept sticking on Smith and knew that wasn't correct, but I couldn't zero in on White. He was definitely a late sign and came out of nowhere, and I thought it was from his NBC play.

The coaches were there that's for sure.I was hoping they would be looking at some of the guys off of the NJCAA national team that were Sophmores to be next year. There were a lot of nice arms on that team.
