But when you compare the resumes of Hooper and Butler, it's a complete mismatch. It doesn't mean Todd will be better than Hooper would have been. But for those that were critical of the process and what ADES was doing, he made a FANTASTIC decision. Time will judge what happens from here on.

And fwiw, I believe Kevin didn't get much run because he has no college coaching (head or assistant) experience. That's a lot to ask a program to overlook, imho.
You make some very good points and I agree with all of them.

I was wondering. Before AD Sexton was hired as the athletic director, how much athletic department experience did he have?

Yep, and we are still hearing about it.

If Hooper has that many advocates (such as Leyland) then how come he's not coaching in the Tigers farm system? It's hard for me to believe Leyland couldn't land him a rookie league or class A team to manage.

He has actually had some opportunities for that in recent years, but he declined those to stay closer to his family. Being in baseball, playing or managing, is not easy on the family life. His thought process might have been to bide his time until Gene stepped down (or, in this case, was fired). Maybe he really did want the head job at WSU, but after seeing that he has no shot at it in his current gig, maybe he might look to head back towards his goal of being a manager in the big leagues and work his way through lower levels of affiliated ball.

I too really wanted to see Hooper get a shot because it would have been fun to see him back at WSU, but like WuDrWu said, the right decision was made and wasn't even close.

His decision to stay close to home for his family is one reason that I think that the Asst. Coaching position (if offered) may be appealing for him. If he would prefer to stay close to home, he would then have to choose between the Wingnuts and the Shockers (which one would be better for his career). I think that coaching in the minor/major leagues and juco ball is always an option whether he stays or goes the Div. I college route. However, if the Shocker position ever opens up again, he needs some experience at that level.

My heart was really pulling for Hoop, but my brain, or at least what's left of my brain, is telling me this was a really good hire.

One negative about Coach Butler is that he pegged my coaching energy/postive attitude meter at the top end and now it's stuck. Looks like I will have to buy a new higher capacity meter.

Glad to hear it. If either one wants to upgrade the D1 resume it might be a great opportunity for either. How much does the DOBO make? Could he look at one for the asst and the other as the DOBO?

                      Inquiring minds want to know.

I don't think that DOBO's can work with kids. There is a volunteer Asst. position but that is usually for a coach who wants to get a door opened up to coach somewhere and is willing to move on after a couple of years. It doesn't pay very well. They will often go to a juco or a small college, etc. after working on their college resume.

If that hire comes to fruition, it's going to look odd having an AC with a resume that looks more like it belongs to a DOBO, and a DOBO with a resume that looks more like it belongs to an AC.
