For a long time he had done what he wanted and now for the first time he had no control over the baseball program.

I would disagree with this statement. I travel quite a bit and WSU is known for its baseball and has been for many years as far as national relevance. A final four may get WSU noticed for basketball but the NIT and Sweet Sixteen did not bring WSU to national relevance in basketball.

We keep hearing from all the Gene supporters and former players. But I dont think we will ever hear much from the majority of former players and fans who all agree Gene needed to move on. It's only the vocal minority right now. Plus no former player, I wouldnt think, would want to verbally bash his former coach...

I honestly feel that Gene gave up on national prominence at WSU ever again when he entered the "OU Job For A Day" program. He said himself, "We've taken WSU as far as it can go." Maybe it is naive to think someone else can do better, but I am ready to find out.
I deeply respect and appreciate what was built by Gene and Brent here. I just did not want to see it driven over a cliff forever by them. This is an attractive program, IMO, due to facilities and tradition. Facilities and tradition were one of the things Schaus used to lure Marshall away from Winthrop. The same could happen for baseball as well.
It's done and I'm ready to move forward.Basketball Season Tix since '77-78 . . . . . . Baseball Season Tix since '88

Even when I am wearing a WSU basketball shirt. The final 4 may change this, but since it just happened I don't know yet. But the Sweet 16 and NIT did nothing to change the perspective that WSU is a good baseball school.
I would wager that outside of locals and older college baseball fans, a significantly higher percentage of under-40s know WSU for it's recent hardwood accomplishments.

Turgeon before, I've been asked how the "new" coach is doing, I've heard people say "haven't you been solid the last couple of years?.
I can't remember how many times I've been asked about basketball, i can remember how many times about baseball: zero.

The run of CWS appearances is incredibly difficult to pull off, though.Originally posted by BleacherReportFred VanVleet on Shockers' 3-Pt Shooting Confidence -- ' Honestly, I just tell these guys to let their nuts hang.'

Regarding this entire discussion related to how Gene was treated my thoughts (not that anyone particularly cares) are this:
Even if I were to agree with Gene and his crowd that he is owed another year of mediocrity out of loyalty, and I don't believe this to be the case, I would say "The irony of ironies is that Gene actually received more loyalty from Wichita State and Eric Sexton than Gene showed his own wife and family over a much greater period of time". Onward and upward!
