Very frustrating. Thank God our old standby 3rd to 1st pickoff play works although I am hard pressed to explain how that can be after all these years, but it still seems to work.

Good start, followed by a productive out, but standard WSU situational hitting after that. Gillaspie is not the best guy to have up with a runner at third and one out.

That's why you put the ball in play. So far, doing that pretty well. Except for the one that cost us a run.

Okay! Kudos to Harbutz, whom I've criticized mucho, for getting things underway.

As the Cardinals used to say to Bob Gibson back in 1968, "Okay, big guy -- there's your run."

Agreed. He was really scuffling. The Northwestern series may have done him a lot of good. Aside from the TERRIBLE baserunning.

Glad to see Gene put the bunt on to move the runner over. It paid off that time.

With a quality arm like Cody Forsythe you need to take advantage of just about every opportunity you get.

It helps that Baker actually seems competent at getting a bunt down.

I dislike the sacrifice even more than Gene does, if that's possible, although in this case it may have helped (hard to say for sure, since the intrepid Harbutz would have been running on the fly ball with two out and might have scored anyway -- but it did save him a chance to get picked off).

What I'd like to see a little more is bunting for hits to start innings, especially by a guy like Dearman. Bunting and forcing them to make a play, as opposed to bunting and giving away outs, is good aggressive baseball, and no one is more aggressive than old #10 -- so why the hell not?

Gene realizes his butt is on the line right?

Why is nobody warmed up when Elam has struggled this entire game?

Seriously lose two quickly an lets get this program moved in another direction.

Yes, it seems clear that Elam doesn't have it. Unfortunately, there are two Cales, and even more unfortunately, the wrong one showed up at the park today -- the one capable of getting taken apart by weak hitters at the bottom of the order. Runners at first and second with one out isn't ideal, but looking at the SIU lineup, no way should it have been a situation that produces three runs.
