  • Wichita State University @ California State University Long Beach

My two favorite college baseball programs squaring off. Although the Dirtbags are only 6 - 11, they've scheduled tough as usual and their record reflects that.
They'll be throwing Shane Carle on Friday who is 1 - 2 with a ND, but owns a 1.82 ERA. His losses have come against AZ State and Vanderbilt throwing a total of 11.2 innings and only giving up 4 earned runs.

This looks to be a low scoring series as CSULB has only one player who hits over .300 (team avg. is .232). The entire team has ONLY three HR's on the season - weird. Then again, when you have played their schedule, the hitting is going to come at a premium. Now that they are facing our pitching, perhaps they'll light up the scoreboard - who knows.

It figures that when we face a down CSULB, we happen to be slumping as a program too. No predictions, this series is a coin flip, but I will say Friday appears to be a loss as Carle looks to be a nasty pitcher.

Their home field is also one that has traditionally been very hard to hit a home run in.

If we score more than 3 runs in any game, I'll call it a successful weekend.

      ... No really, deuces.

Texas Pan American was a bad hitting team too.

True. But something tells me Long Beach's hitting struggles have a lot to do with facing pitchers from Vanderbilt, UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State. I can't be convinced that Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Northwestern State posed the same issue for Pan American. They just stink.

I think we're settling back into the norm of the last 4 years- WSU is a decent but not great team. Top 50-100 but likely not good enough for an at-large.

LBSU is no Fullerton, but they don't suck. A sweep (in our favor) would inspire some optimism. Winning 2 out of 3 this weekend would be good. Anything less and it'll reinforce that we're closer to a Top 100 team than we are to being Top 50.

I'd like to see continued progress from our starting pitching and bullpen this weekend. As others have said, we're not gonna hit worth a damn against these guys so we'll need to gut out some 3-2 type wins.

Let's not get swept and be competitive in the other games.

2 and 1 would be a great weekend here.

Cale Elam has stranded 5 runners in the first 2 innings.

0-0 to the top of the 3rd.

                      Have we had a baserunner?

LBSU gifts us a run when their CF overruns a Gillaspie single, allowing Doggett to score from 1st.

CG on 3rd w/1 out, WSU up 1-0

1-0 to the bottom of the 4th

9 LOB for Long Beach, Elam with 7 Ks

LBSU finally gets to Cale with a 2 out single.

1-1 to the 7th. Elam likely out for the night after 94 pitches by my count.
