  • Texas Pan-America For 3 This Weekend

The Shocks host the Texas Pan-Am Broncs in a 3 game series this Friday, Satruday and Sunday.

The Broncs are 2-7 and are coming off a 6-1 loss agaisnt Texas on Tuesday.
However, looks like the have at least on pretty decent arm. 6-3 JR RH Sam Street out of Melbouran, Australia via New Mexico Junior College owns both of UTPA's wins and was the pitcher of records in the loss to Texas.

He beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7-1 and Northwestern State 4-1. He went 6 innings against Texas allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Not sure which game he will pitch sinc he went Tuesday.

Overall their pitching numbers don't look all that bad. The OBA is 0.257 and their team ERA is 4.14. However, of the 53 runs allowed, 19 have been unearned.

They aren't scoring a ton averaging just 3.2 runs per game, the team BA is 0.226 and they have only 1 home run in their 9 games.

So far all of UTPA's games have been on the road. This is a series the Shocks need to sweep.

Should be an easy sweep. I say we go 2 and 1.

That's funny that you bring up RPI 2 weeks into the season. If our RPI was 1 right now, you'd be saying it's wayyyyy too early in the year to be throwing out RPI numbers. But of course you have no problems mentioning it when we're above 200.

        Just thought it was funny.

Where did you get your numbers anyway?
        Deuces Valley.
        ... No really, deuces.

I get your point, but will the Shocks play anyone this year a decent RPI?

I guess my attempt of being facetious failed. I got it from warrennnolan.com.

I think you were looking at UTPA's RPI, but Wichita's strength of schedule. Our rpi is a much more impressive 150. On the bright side, Central Arkansas is one spot ahead of us on strength of schedule, and at 12-1 has an RPI of 46. So from my math, with this strength of schedule, WSU should just need to finish the year with a 40 game win streak to get themselves onto the NCAA tourney bubble. ;)

Oops. My bad then. 40 game win streak you say? I'll buy that.

Shocks down 3-1 after 5. Kris Gardner not nearly as sharp today and as in his last start.

Now Kris gives up back-to-back home runs to lead off the 6th, only the Broncs 2nd and 3rd of the year, to put UTPA up 5-1.

Foster Vielock comes on in relief of Gardner and get's the first two outs before giving up the 3rd solo homer of the inning to a team hitting 0.226 with 1 home run coming into the game.

UTPA's Dylan Badura, a soft throwing lefty (imagine that), has dominated the Shocks to this point.

UTPA 6 - Shocks 1 going into the bottom of the 6th.

We might be lucky to go 2-1 this weekend.

                              UTPA 7 - Shocks 5.

Back to the drawing board I guess. The biggest negative from today's game is that we went with our #1 guy on the mound and cound beat UTPA. Ouch!

This definitely isn't all on Johnny Coy but we have to start getting more prodcution from the big buy. 0.220 with 6 RBI (4th on the team) in 12 games won't get it done.

Actually, 5 runs should be enough to beat a team batting 0.226 coming into the game. So I put this at the feet of the pitchers, as much if not more than on the hitters. Shocker pitchers gave up 13 hits today including 3 dingers and 3 doubles plus 3 walks and a hit batter.

I realize it's just one game, but doesn't give off a warm and fuzzy feeling.
