So he is drafted by the Pirates and is going to sign with the Marlins?
he was taken by the Marlins, not the Pirates

I obviously misread that one. I'm not surprised he is signing although that was quicker than expected which is actually good to find out ASAP.

Johnny Coy and Cale Elam must have let it be known they would probably return to WSU next year or otherwise indicated they might be tough signs. Perhaps the same is true of Nick Petree from MSU.

Craig Nicks from Maize? 6'6 and throws around 90 I believe, think he signed with a local JUCO so there is a pitcher they can get on late I guess. Must have been reasons why they didn't have interest in the first place though. Just rambling...

I'm going to go ahead use the fact that he threw 94 mph, racked up 124K to 25bb, WHIP under 1, and was drafted fairly high to assume he was pretty descent.

WSU baseball has dropped off but this kid was good and it sucks he isn't coming.

I don't know Doc. A 13th round draft pick seems pretty solid to me. Chris O'Brien went to the Dodgers in the 18th round last year. I think losing Blake hurts. But I guess we will never know for sure. We were worried about losing Mitch Mormann last summer and that didn't work out so well and Mitch doesn't even get drafted this year although I would expect he will get a free agency look from someone. All-in-all though I would have liked to see what Blake could have done in a Shocker uniform.

The new hope of Coy and Elam returning to the Shocks and adding a few more in the Win Column may have just got countered by the loss of Blake. And those few more Ws will be just as important to next year's team as they would have been for this year's.

We have 3 first team Freshman all americans and 3 other Freshman that started as position players. We either recruited pretty well last year, have a great coaching staff, or had no talent returning. It's probably a little of all 3 but I think you have to admit we had a pretty solid group of Freshman this year.

Everybody realizes we started 7 fresh/soph the last 1/3 of the season and 2/3 of our weekend rotation were also Freshman right? That means there weren't very many draft eligable guys that saw much playing time. I think the fact that WSU had very few drafted is more evidence to the 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes than anything to do with the current status of the program.

To be honest I was extremely excited when the 2008 class had so many players and recruits drafted and look how that turned out. I am not sure where you want to be? If guys are drafted in the 1st few days they sign and if they don't get drafted we're disappointed in the level of talent. I guess the best scenario is to have guys drafted that don't sign, but that seems like a very fine line to walk...

Well said, shockfan. In case you haven't noticed yet, Doc is more than a little sour on the current state of WSU baseball. Sometimes extreme crankiness can cloud one's judgment. Of course, Doc spends more time on campus than I do, so maybe he knows of some stealth walk-on candidate for the Shocks who's a better talent than a 13th round draft choice -- but I think it's more likely that Logan is a significant and disappointing loss.

Still, draft stuff happens, and not just to the Shocks. But they do have some notable young talent in addition to Gardner, Ladwig, and Gillaspie (the All-American trio), so let's hope they can hang on without further losses of note, make a couple of late pickups (once upon a time, for example, Braden Looper was a late summer pickup), and then have their good young players continue to progress next year. That combination, plus a healthy season for once from Bayliff -- which isn't really all that much to ask -- should give us all a much happier outlook come next year's NCAA tournament time. Even KC thinks so, and if prospects look bright to him, the rest of us need to get out our sunglasses.

According to the article in the paper today Blake signed for 125K bonus. Seemed to me just by the comments he was pretty set on going. If he was able to consistently throw 93-94 next year and have just a solid season he could have improved his situation by a considerable amount. Again based on the comments I think the kid just wanted to get into pro ball. No doubt 125K beats a kick to the head but another 12 months and he could have bumped up nicely in the draft and money. Although I guess you never know when an arm might go, etc.

Wasn't the same thing said about Moorman and others? Sure, it could have, but then again, he could have dropped more depending on what happened here.

I think you have two different animals but yes obviously anything can happen over the course of 12 months.

Actually the two animals do seem kind of similar to me. Both hard throwing pitchers. Both transfers that were only going to be at WSU for a year. Both guys offered over $100,000 to sign (I think I remember someone posting that Mormann turned down over $100K to play at WSU this year).

Look at the actual ERA's, WHIP, K's per innings pitched, K/BB ratio. Look at what round they were drafted. Look at what year they were drafted (sophomore vs junior). One was being offered more or equal to probable worth. One was offered less than worth.

                                They are different animals
