  • 2012 MLB Draft

As usual I'm sure the Shocks are going to get hit hard by the draft. I haven't followed Day 1 of the draft at all. How many of our guys have been picked up so far?

Surely you jest, marty. Paul S offered this comment last week: "(WSU's) two All-MVC players are eligible for the draft - DH Johnny Coy and closer Cale Elam. If Baseball America is an accurate guide, neither will be picked on the first two days. WSU coaches believe there is a good chance both will return for 2013..."

I wouldn't worry about the draft.

Coy and Elam are the only two who might go but this year anybody after round 10 can't get more than 100K I believe. No more big signing bonuses.

Parker Zimmerman, shockers recruit is a catcher out of Stillwater high, was in New York over the Weekend for a pre draft workout with the Mets.

I would imagine though if its not early rounds it will be hard to sign people like before.

So at worse the shox get hit for 3, 2 current players and 1 incoming. I doubt that even happens.

Certain teams still may not have a problem giving more than 100k after Round 10. You risk paying the penalty and depending on how it all works out, may be worth it to some. It'll be interesting to see how the new rules play out as a whole. We've already seen it cost one player the number 1 pick and fall to 8 I believe because of who his agent is and how the money appears to work this year.

Even if they don't sign someone in the first 10 rounds that money that was slotted for that sign is subtracted from the teams bonus pool. Now they can sign someone under the slot and then use that money elsewhere but what kind of agent is going to let their kid get under slot knowing that if the team doesn't sign him they lose that team pool money anyways.

So to me they won't be paying over slot because they won't be saving under slot elsewhere to pay over slot.

No I guess what you are saying is they can pay over slot anyways and just pay a fine?

Yup. We'll know more after this years draft and signings are all done. I believe you can go over the "budget" by up to 5% with no penalty. Once you reach 5% or more things start getting interesting. Or is it just a monetary thing up to 5% and then loss of draft picks over that? I'll have to go find that later to be sure. I don't think anyone is going to be willing to lose future draft picks.

Did I read somewhere that they now have to have draft picks signed by the All-Star game on July 10th (this year) or am I dreaming that?

I don't know if that's the exact date or not, but it's close.

Zimmerman has had some back issues which might make him a little bit more of a risk.

All 4 are juniors, which is not surprising. Serritella is a redshirt junior. I would expect all 4 to sign.

Also isn't MSU's Nick Petree draft eligible this year. (His birth date is July 16, 1990).

Petree is draft eligible but despite winning and having a low ERA I don't believe he projects well with MLB scouts. I hope he gets drafted but who knows.
