I really enjoyed Sully's article about Johnny in today's Eagle:

Hopefully, Johnny will have a Roy Hobbs kind of year for his Swan song as a Shocker.

Go Shocks! Go Roy, er I mean Johnny!

A 43% increase in his benchpress? Whoa.

That is impressive. Nice article on Johnny. Sounds like he did the right things last summer.

I see your point but I think it shows an overall strength gain which will be helpful in any sport. The thing that wasn't clear in the article when it said he upped "his bench press from 185 pounds (seven repititions) to 265.". Is that seven repititions at 265 or one repitition at 265?

Pretty sure it's seven. And I completely agree that it will be helpful- the MLB in the 1990s showed pretty conclusively that more muscle = more pop.

10% increase in muscle will increase hr production by 50%. Coy could be set to have a monster year and challenge for Wsu homerun record.

That may be tough. In Mark Standiford's day the players weren't on steroids, but perhaps the bat's were. It would be cool though if Johnny could tie Mark's single season record for homers. A photo op of the 5-7 Standiford with the 6-8 Coy would be great.

In any case, if nothing else Johnny's improvement in his bench press says a lot about the young man's character and work ethic. He could have easily went home and sulked all summer after not being drafted. I like the attitude this reflects.

                    Go Johnny, go!

When I first heard it, I quickly dismissed the idea that replacing strength coach Kerry Rosenboom after the '07 season was the reason the baseball team has slipped into mediocrity as grasping at straws, but this article made me reconsider. I know there is more to strength than the bench press, and more to winning baseball games than being strong, but can we really be surprised about not winning the Valley when our 6'8" 4th year junior heart of the order guy isn't as strong as your average high school clean-up hitter? It sounds like he's got himself into a respectable level of shape for a 22 year old D-1 athlete coming into this year, but I'm disappointed he had to do much of the hard work on his own away from WSU. Hopefully having Rosenboom back will have a bigger impact than I expected. I just assumed whoever is in charge of conditioning at a D-1 program, they would have to have enough knowledge and experience to get at least as good of results out of the team as a kid with a YMCA membership and a weightlifting book can get on his own.

There is alot if reason wsu program has slipped, but the change in weight/conditioning coach is very low on that list.

I think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Just because a kid increases his bench press and overall strength (from below average to possibly average considering his weight) does not mean he is all of a sudden going to be hitting homeruns all over the place. The guy still has to make quality contact and teams still have to pitch to him. If there are no other guys in the lineup to protect the now "strong" JC then the idea of him hitting all these homeruns goes further down the crapper.

However, the less than awesome schedule that we have this year should go a long way in helping this team find some offense.
