  • anantomy of failing program

Mr. Sullentrop summed it quite nicely one of the reason why WSU is in the position it is in.

That’s a position the Shockers are in in large part due to a 2008 recruiting class that started with 13 players as freshmen in 2009 and now has two players remaining – P Josh Smith and 1B Johnny Coy. The problem wasn’t the drafted players lost last season – Tyler Grimes, Charlie Lowell, etc. The problem is the four players – Josh Rosecrans, Dalton Banwart, Andrew Letourneau, Cameron Maldonado – who didn’t pan out and are no longer Shockers.

Spot on to call that one of the reasons, because although 2007 and 2008 were excellent teams (and 2006 could as easily as not have made it to the supers as well), 13 newbies -- not including one of the most promising in Logan Watkins, who turned pro --is an awful lot for a team that recruits the Midwest. Maybe in Texas or California or the southeast you can do that, but around here these days that's rebuilding, not reloading; and when a bunch of them then didn't pan out, the rebuilding really became a chore.

By the way, Josh Rosecrans actually did land on his feet at Alabama (although he was then nearly blown off them by the Tuscaloosa tornado) and made a reasonable contribution there. So he wasn't a bad player -- he just didn't work out for WSU.
