  • Around The American Non Conference

Memphis treated the worst team in the Valley exactly like you would expect them to, hammering Valpo 13-0. 3 Tiger pitchers combined to 1 hit the I don't know what the **** they're called these days in FedExPark.

Houston lost a tough extra inning affair to Cal in Arizona. A pitcher's duel, Cal took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 7th. Houston answered with 2 unearned in the bottom of the 8th on a 3 base throwing error following a bunt attempt. Cal tied it in the 9th with a solo HR off Houston's ace reliever Derrick Cherry then got 2 more off him in the 10th to win 4-2. Cal is a "best of the rest" PAC 12 team (picked after their front loaded 5).

League favorite and perirenal powerhouse ECU welcomed the 9 time defending NEC champion Bryant Bulldogs into the friendly confines of Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville. The host Pirates were exceedingly accommodating to the Bulldogs, leaving their ace pitcher on the bench for their opener. Bryant promptly greeted their hosts with a 2 run second and 3 run 5th, cruising to an easy 10-2 win over the 12th ranked team in the country. The teams will play 2 more this weekend.

UCONN entered the wayback machine and travelled to Tampa to renew pleasantries with their former conference mates at South Florida. UCONN is the preseason pick in the Big Priest. The teams battled into extra innings and a Huskie tater in the 10th proved to be the difference in the game. The Bulls had a lot of swing and miss in their opener, striking out 20 times against UCONN pitching. USF won't leave the state of Florida until APRIL 8 when they travel to New Orleans for their series vs Tulane. They'll play 22 out of their 1st 25 at home, with only 3 one game day trips to in state opponents breaking up the home stand. In total 23 of 29 (they open AAC play with a road series at UCF) at home to start the season. Southern advantages.

UCF welcomed MAAC doormat Sienna College to the Mouse House to open the 2022 season. As you might expect, the Kanniggets shut out their guests 12-0. UCF has a much more balanced and challenging schedule than USF. They actually leave Florida once before their April 8 road conference opener at Memphis, traveling to Georgia to play 3 against Georgia Southern next weekend. The Knights also play 2 at #11 FSU, host #5 Ole Miss for 3 and play a home and home with Miami as part of a challenging non-conference schedule.

Cincinnati travelled to Fort Meyers to take on FGCU. FGCU is a quality program, picked 2nd behind an excellent Liberty squad in the ASUN. In frankly a poorly played game, the Bearcats took advantage of 6 errors and 5 walks from their hosts to cruise to a relatively easy 9-6 win. Three Cincy pitchers combined to walk 6 and hit 2 more but their defense behind them committed just one error and kept all the free passes from hurting the cause. The also only surrendered 4 hits to the Eagles. The teams will play a DH today and a single game tomorrow.

Tulane is hosting America East also ran UMASS-Lowell. The Blue-Green Wave coasted to a comfortable 10-2 win in the first of 3 scheduled this weekend at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.

    Tulane, UCF start off 3-0
    Memphis 2-1
    Houston, ECU and WSU 0-3

Not a stellar start for the AAC with 11-14 record.
