Not a great start to the season. Only 3 games in but the Shocks did give us much to hang our hats on either pitching-wise or hitting-wise.

The Shocks struck out 39 times over the 3 games. Way too much. If the Shocks had a bunch of sluggers maybe you could get away with that but after 3 games the Shocks slugging percentage is at an anemic 0.286 as a team.

The Shocker team ERA was 7.12 in this series and averaged 6.7 free passes (BB & HBP) per game.

Clearly there is work to be done.
    Wow pretty pathetic all around.

I’m not sure you can say “we can bat” either. Unless you think strikeouts count as hits or something.

      ... No really, deuces.

Maybe I should have said "we can score".

Although that is the pro game kids see...strikeouts or homeruns.

          • I think the bats and defense will be fine. Starting and bullpen pitching will be a matter mainly of who throws strikes and challenges hitters. Way too much nibbling this weekend.

            • If you thought we had a bad weekend, ECU was swept at home by Bryant. Damn.

Good thing, because if he had they would have scored.

He’s had success in that role in the past. As I said, he’s not perfect, but he’s had success as his wins and two year ERA show.
Wins and ERA can be misleading. How many inherited runners scored? How many of those wins were either because he blew a hold or was put in at the right time to steal the win?

23 games last year, 7 of them he was ineffective. AAC ERA 4.71

Stuempfig should have been good enough to get through an inning or two.
If he quits walking people, that would help.

Last year, he probably was in the top 2 or 3 (probably after McDonough) out of the pen.
That not saying much, WSU pitching was below average for NCAA Div 1 baseball.

I WATCHED him pitch last year and have good outings. I’m sure that Wedge has never heard of your “statistics” that make you smarter than him. You’re a joke.

A coach isn’t always at fault for a players failures. Stuempfig sucked. That’s all. So did the rest of the pen Wedge put into the game.

Although I don't disagree that he is better than the stats indicate, I have a hard time believing that Wedge (and every other collegiate baseball coach) doesnt use the advanced stats SB was referring to, along with plenty of other facts. Wins are an outdated metric and there are a lot of outside factors in ERA.
Brummett throws, STRUCK HIM OUT! THE SHOCKERS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! AN UNBELIEVABLE STORY!

Since you’re backing SB, you must not know what you’re talking about either. Stuempfig didn’t WALK anyone on Saturday. He faced 3 batters who got 3 hits, and no outs. Wedge actually was critical of Stuempfig for giving up a hit or two when he had an 0-2 count. Hynes followed up with a walked batter and a hit batter.

SB was critical of Wedge putting in Stuempfig. Of course Wedge uses advanced stats. My comment regarding advanced stats was sarcastic. Stumpfig’s best past outings was when he started a new inning, not when he came in with runners on base.

Sorry, agree with you there. My meter was off.

                          • Listening to an EW coaches show vs an IB show is like night and day. Now they both had disappointing weekends, but one coach isn’t doing any sugarcoating. If you aren’t listening, tune into 97.5. If you’re late, probably worth a podcast listen. And we’re only 10 minutes in.

Are you mental or Stuempfig mom?

I was never critical of Wedge. I was critical of what you said

The last two years, he’s been consistently good
Which is not true. You can look at any advanced stat and see there is nothing consistent about him. The only thing you can depend on him is to be inconsistent.
