In his fifth year Gene Stephenson had WSU playing in the national championship game after having taken WSU to the ncaa tournament for the third straight year. Back then only 32 teams I believe made the tournament in 1980 and 1981, although by 1982 I think they had expanded to 40 or 48.
In his fifth year, coach Marshall has taken WSU to one ncaa tournament and is yet to win a single game in the tourney. Coach Marshall has a ways to go to match the young Gene Stephenson. But he does have the drive and desire to win that Gene had.
I will also add that Gene didn't have the full allotment of scholarships and was operating on a shoe string budget back then. He didn't even have a stadium to play in. Fans sat on flat-beds or picnic tables to watch the games. Marshall has the added benefit of chartered flights to games as well as for recruiting. Luxuries Gene still doesn't have.
