  • Shocks at UC

    5-0 bad guys through 5.
“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

Shocks get a solo home run from Hunter Gibson in the top of the 7th but that is all.

Cincy takes game 1 by a 5-1 score.

The Shocks did get 7 in innings out of Liam Eddy but Cincy got 7 even better innings out of their starter.

With Barnhouse on the shelf this weekend with a lower back strain the Shocks needed innings out of Liam.

Jordan Boyer and Luke Ritter continue to find the hits hard to come by as they combined to go 0-8.

Certainly no reason, in and of itself, to cut a coach loose. Butler needs to go because of his overall record at Wichita State and the state of apathy that seems to have infected the fan base rather extensively. Of course, those things have been hashed and rehashed on this forum many times over. He has had more than ample time to get the program moving in the right direction. It hasn't happened and at this point I think it is just a matter of playing out the string.

I will give Cincy a bit of credit. They started out the season 1-10 and somehow find themselves sitting in 3rd place in the conference with a 9-7 record despite being 20-22 overall. Somehow they have gotten some things done in AAC play so far. However, only 2.5 games separate 3rd place Cincy from 7th place Wichita State. So still a lot of movement can happen in the middle of the AAC pack. But I really don't think it will make much difference what shuffling goes on in the middle of the AAC pack. It is looking more and more like the AAC might be a one-bid league this year unless someone other than ECU can win the AAC Tournament. UConn maybe has the next best resume with an RPI of 24 and a 7-7 record in Quadrant 1 games but the are only 7-8 in AAC play. I would think the Huskies will be highly motivated when they host the Shockers next weekend. Tulane's record doesn't look too bad at 26-15 (8-4) but they are only 1-6 in Quadrant 1 games and have an RPI of 86 at this point. Only slightly better than the Shocker's RPI of 94. UConn and Tulane face off on the final weekend of the regular season in New Orleans. Maybe Houston could sneak in as an at-large team if they finish the season strong but they lost to last place USF tonight and that's not the way to start a strong run to the finish line.

We lost 2 vs Cincy this year. Every year they suck in OOC games, but play well vs tougher competition in AAC play. Strange program.

Cincy takes Game 2 of the series by an 11-9 score. Just looking at the box score seems like kind of a strange game.

The Shocks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st but left the bases loaded despite getting no hits in that at bat and striking out twice. Basically, UConn scored that run for the Shocks on an error and 3 walks. Cincy tied it up in the bottom of the 1st on a single, walk and a single and then took a 4-1 lead on a 3-run homer.

In the top of the 2nd two walks followed by a Jordan Boyer homerun tied the game for the Shockers. But the Shocks weren't done as Luke Ritter was hit by a pitch and Hunter Gibson reached on a bunt single. Ross Cadena flied out to right for the 2nd out with Luke moving to 3rd. Noah Croft doubled to left field scoring Luke from 3rd and advancing Hunter to 3rd with both Hunter and Noah scoring on a throwing error by the Cincy shortstop giving the Shocks a 7-4. A walk, hit batter and a single leading off the bottom of the 2nd made it 7-5 and was the end of the day for Preston Snavely with Aaron Haase on in relief with no outs and runners at the corners. A wild pitch allowed the runner from 3rd to score making it 7-6 and moved the runner from 1st into scoring position at 2nd. Haase then gave up a walk and a double to tie the game at 7 and put runners on 2nd and 3rd. At that point Clayton McGinness came on in relief of Haase. McGinness gave up an RBI singled with the batter taking 2nd on the throw and keeping runners at 2nd and 3rd with Cincy now up 8-7. A walk loaded the bases and an RBI sacrifice fly made the score 9-7 after 2 innings.

Then, after scoring 16 runs combined in the first 2 innings each team only managed to score 2 runs each the rest of the way. With Cincy scoring a run in the 3rd and the 6th and the Shocks scoring single runs in the 5th and the 6th.

Clayton McGinness actually pitched quite well once he got out of the 2nd inning. Allowing only the 2 additional runs as he finished the game for the Shocks. Unfortunately, 3 Cincy relievers were able to match him.

Jordan Boyer broke out of his slump going 3-5 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI however Luke Ritter was again hitless in 3 official at bats,

My guess is with Tommy Barnhouse on the shelf the Shocks will see Johnny Wholestaff tomorrow but the damage has been mostly done at this point.

The Shocks are now 20-22 overall and 5-9 in AAC play. The Shocks are now only a half game up on 8th place UCF and 2 games ahead of last place USF.

Freshman RH Connery Peters making the 1st start of his Shocker career today.

As they did in game 2 the Shocks score in the top of the 1st although they probably should have had more. The Shocks loaded the bases with not outs on a walk, infield single and a walk. A chopper up the middle resulted in a force at 2nd but scored the runner from 3rd. But a 5-4-3 double play on a sharply hit grounder by Ross Cadena ended the Shocker at bat.

Connery had a good 1-2-3 inning and looked much better than did the Cincy starter.
                .
Cincy may be out of pitching. To this point their starter has no command at all. He walks Noah Croft to lead off the 2nd. Noah stole 2nd with 2 outs. David VanVooren walked to bring up Jordan Boyer. A wild pick off attempt at 1st base scored Noah from 2nd with David going to 3rd. Jordan flies out to center to end the at bat with the Shocks leading 2-0. The Cincy starter has already thrown 44 pitches in 2 innings Hopefully, the Shocks don't regret not taking better advantage of the opportunities they have had so far. Their 2 runs have been gifts from the Cincy pitcher.

Connery walks the first 2 batters of the Cincy 2nd. A ground ball out to 2nd moves the runners up a base and a single sliced into left field scored both runners to tie the game at 2-2.

Luke Ritter goes yard with a no doubter to left field in the 3rd to put the Shocks back on top 3-2. Connery sets the Bearcats down in order in the 3rd although a couple of ball were hard hit right at Shocker outfielders. But after 3 innings the Cincy starter is at 65 pitches to only 39 for Connery.

Cincy, not surprisingly, is making a pitching change to start the 4th probably feeling pretty good they are only down 1 after at this point. Shocks get a 1 out double from Paxton Wallace but two ground outs to the left side end the at bat without further damage. In the bottom of the inning a throwing error by Paxton Wallace at 3rd, a wild pitch and a ground ball single up the middle tie the game at 3-3. Two walks sandwiched around a strike out loaded the bases for Cincy and the Shocks go to Mitchell Walters looking for some middle relief innings out of their closer. Mitchell gets a pop out to short to end the threat. I suppose both teams are probably okay with getting through 4 innings tied after starting guys who have not done much of that this year.

Shocks get a runner to 3rd with 2 outs in the top of the 5th but are unable to score. Cincy opens the 5th with a solid double into the left field corner, a wild pitch and a solid single to left to take their first lead of the game 4-3. Mitchell then walks the next two batters to load the bases, still with no outs. A high fly ball to left center hits the wall but the runners had to wait ti see if the ball was caught so the only 1 run scored to make it 5-3 but the bases are still loaded with no outs. After a strike out a line double to the wall down the right field lline scores 2 more to make it 7-3 still with runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. After another strike out for the 2nd out a passed ball (on a high fast ball) and followed by another passed ball scores both of the runnes and the Bearcats are now up 9-3 and have knocked Mitchell Walters out of the game although Mitchel had thrown about 40 pitches this inning so may have been getting close to his limit. Calvin Marley comes on in relief of Walters. So the strategy of bringing in Walters early doesn't work out well this time.

The Shocks scored a run in the top of the 6 on a Noah Croft doubled down the line in left and scored on a David VanVooren's 2 out single to left but David was thrown out at 2nd when he tried to advance on the throw to the plate. The Shocks gifted that run right bact to the Bearcats in the bottom on the inning. An error by Paxton Wallace at 3rd (his 2nd of the game) followed by two ground outs moved the runner to 3rd. The next batter struck out on a wild ptich and reached 1st safely with the runner from 3rd scoring. Cincy leads 10-4 after 6.

The Shocks go down in order in the 7th, 8th and 9th and Cincy completes the sweep with a 10-4. Cincy got an outstanding 6 inning relief effort from freshman Nick Murray.

MikeKennedyRulZ and ShockerFever predicted the Cincy sweep. I thought the Shocks would get at least one game in this series. This is the 1st sweep of the year in AAC play for Cincy.

The Fat Lady is now putting on her gown.

The Shocks are now 20-23 overall and 5-10 in AAC play. This loss may put last place into play for the Shocks unless they reverse the trend big time against UConn and ECU before facing of with last place USF to close out the regular season.

Man-o-man, giving up double digit runs again. Giving up double digits in 23 percent of your games, I bet Kemnitz is rolling over on his lawn right now.

Elsewhere in the AAC Tulane hangs on for a 9-5 win over ECU salvaging a win in their series and handing the Pirates only their 2nd league loss of the year and keeping Tulane 2 games ahead of 3rd place Cincinnati.

Houston scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th to take a 3-2 lead at last place USF. However, the Bulls opened their last at bat in the 9th with a single off of Houtston closer Fred Villareal and then with won out got a 2-run walk off home run to win the game and take the series against the Cougars 2-1. This will greatly hurt Houston's chances for an at-large bid. USF improves to 4-11 in AAC play but still in last place.

UCF pushes a run across in the bottom of the 9th to take a 7-6 win over Memphis.

These results drop the Shocks into last place and only 1 game ahead of last place USF.

The sloppiness of this game stood out to me. 5 walks, a hit batter, 5 wild pitches, 2 passed balls and 2 costly errors. Shocker pitchers flat wore out Ross Cadena in this game.

Up next for the Shocks is Missouri State at home on Tuesday and a game at K-State on Wednesday before heading to Hartford/Storrs next weekend for a series at UConn,

Two mid-week games this week is probably not what the doctor order for the Shocks considering the current state of their pitching staff. Maybe the weahterman will bail them out of one these games.

That said Missouri State is having a decidedly down year as they are currently 13-30 overall and 4-8 and 6th place in the Valley after Bradley swept them this weekend. As a team the Bears are hitting .237 and sporting a team ERA of 6.97.

The Shocks have been tumbling for years so they are much further down the hill. Would sure be nice to hit bottom and start the long climb back towards the top although reaching summit may not be in the cards for the Shocks but they certainly need to find a plateau at substantially higher level than where we are.

If this season doesn't get Butler removed, we need to change SN's line under the topic of Wichita State Baseball that says "Discuss nationally respected WSU baseball". Probably should have been changed long ago as it hasn't been true for a decade. Maybe "once nationally respected" or "once proud". So sad.

At least being in a baseball relevant conference could help revive the program with the right leadership.
