    GoShockers Game Notes

In my opinion, anything less than a sweep would be a disappointment.

Miserable day to be outside, but Preston Snavely works 7 sharp scattering 3 hits, Aaron Haase works around a single and 2 base error by Gibby in the 8th and Walters works a 1-2-3 9th for the Shocks first shutout of the year. They made 3 hits and 2 runs stand up. BC's ace today is a decent pitcher and he certainly kept the Shocks off balance. Their pitching falls off considerably after him.

Just my opinion.....no doubt the competition is easier, but they are fielding a lot better since the opening week debacle. They are settling into a lineup now and getting more consistency. The pitching is still erratic, but they are commanding the strike zone more regularly and cutting down the free passes which was insane to start the season.

It seems we can rely on Peters, Haase and especially Walters to close games. Segal is still all over the place. He'll be unhittable or throw 11 balls in a row. We need him to find consistency because his stuff is big league stuff.

In general, walking fewer batters is the biggest difference in not playing pinball type games. That and the competition easing. But everytime I think we've turned a corner we throw in a Sunday Memphis clunker.

Sweeping this weekend, winning at Ku and taking 2-3 at Tulane would go a long way towards turning a corner for sure. It would be nice to be 4-2 in conference with 2 tiebreakers in our back pocket. I think ECU and probably UCONN are the 2 best teams in conference. Everyone else is kind of middling. If we could find 3 starters (I believe Snavely is one for sure) to give us some consistency, we could challenge for 3rd in the conference. We could also not.

But I do think they've improved a bunch so far, and the schedule has eased.

South Florida won at BCU 7-4 on the 13th. BCU had a 3-0 lead in the 6th, USF tied it, it went extra and the Bulls plated 4 in the 10th and held on 7-4.

          Snavely, Shockers Blank Bethune-Cookman, 2-0

Wichita State plated its first run of the contest in the bottom of the third after Katzfey belted a triple down the right field line, prior to scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jordan Boyer.

WSU increased its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Ritter led-off the frame with a single up the middle, before crossing home plate on Wallace's one-out double down the right field line.

Bethune-Cookman starter Anthony Maldonado (2-3) was the tough-luck losing pitcher in the contest after throwing a complete game, but surrendering two earned runs on three hits (see above) with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

3rd? We couldn't even finish in the top half last year with 2 first rounders and more experience. Let's wait til we win a meaningful series (i.e. against a school in the top half of Division I) before making cases of "improvement".

Well a very interesting and somewhat surprising Friday in the American.

First, Cincinnati, fresh off taking 2 of 3 at South Florida, is absolutely boat raced at home from visiting Tulane. The Green Wave scored 4 in the first, 3 in the second, and if there was any doubt as to the winner, plated NINE in the fourth and won the opener 19-4. They backed that up by beating the Bearcats 8-1 in the nightcap.

ECU extended their winning streak to 7 games with a 4-0 shutout at USF. The Bulls are now 1-3 in conference with all those games at home. This is a struggling team right now.

UCF, who has only ventured away from John Euliano Park 5 times this season so far (3 @ #15 ECU all loses, @ #3 Florida a win & @ #14 FSU another win) continued to be strong at home beating UCONN in a real pitchers dual 2-1.

But the real stunner was Memphis, opening up home conference play welcoming Houston to FedEx Park and sweeping the Friday DH 7-3 and 6-4. The Tigers scored 3 in the first and 4 in the fifth to erase any Cougar hope, then again jumped on Houston in the nightcap with 4 in the first. The Cougars battled back to get it tied in the 6th but a two run homer by freshman DH Hunter ******* closed the door. Houston is 1-4 in conference while Memphis improves to 3-2.

Rough start in game 2. Eddy came on to right the ship and shocker score a touchdown in the 4th to come back and take. 10-4 lead.

An excellent long-relief performance for Liam Eddy. 7 innings of scoreless relief allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk in facing only 23 batters.

                    Final: Shocks 11 - Bethune-Cookman 4

Jordan Boyer goes 3-5 to push his average back above .400 at .411. Jacob Katzfey with a home run (his first of the year) and a double. Hunter Gibson 2 doubles and 3 RBI. 8 free passes and 3 Wildcat errors helped the Shocks cause.

THAT Liam Eddy is one of the 6 or 7 best pitchers in this league. I don't know if it was a lot of rest or something changed. His velocity was up and his fastball had movement and he threw 3 pitches for strikes. His fastball was 89-93 and that works. If he can replicate that (and we've yet to see it so..........) then this team certainly has something. Clayton, Stumpy, Tommy......your turn.

Should finish the sweep tomorrow then it's a big week on the road.

ECU continues USF's misery, beating the Bulls 13-7. ECU is now 5-0 and USF is 1-4.

UCONN scored 2 in the 11th to beat UCF 3-1. On a side note, that's almost a 4 hour game that did go 11 but with only 4 runs scored, 4 walks and 13 hits total. 3:48 is way too long for that game...speed things up folks. UCONN is 3-2 and UCF is 1-4 but at least that's against (what I think at least) are the 2 best teams in the conference.

Shocks RPI up to 80, ELO at 93 (a better metric imho) and they have (currently) 12 Q1 games remaining.

Shocks finish off the sweep with a somewhat misleading 7-0 win over Bethune-Cookman. Clayton McGinness gets the start and the win with a very nice 3 hit, 1 walk, scoreless 7 innings. Eric Segal in the 8th and Mitchell Walters in the 9th finish off the Shocks 2nd shutout of the series. Shocks are all of a sudden able to throw strikes with only 2 walks today.

For the longest time looked like the Shocks were going to need the shut out to win the game as it was 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th but the Shocks got 5 of their 10 hits, 5 free passes and a B-C error to plate 6 runs providing the winning margin that disguises how close the game really was.

Both Liam Eddy and Clayton McGinness looked like the pitchers I thought they'd be at the start of the season, although admittedly, Eddy was spectacularly good yesterday.

BCU isn't very good but they weren't inept either, if you ignored the bottom of the 8th today. Still, shutting anyone out 26 out of 27 innings over a weekend is a step in the right direction.

We're really going to be challenged this weekend. Haven't exactly played well away from the Eck and a confident Green Wave team, especially at the plate, will be eager to jump all over us if we don't throw strikes right from the get go. Really hope we can see quality starts from Snavely, Eddy and McGinness and start getting some consistency on the mound.

Around the American today......ECU continues to look the best and USF continues to struggle as the Pirates sweep the Bulls in Tampa, winning today 5-1.

Cincinnati scored 7 in the first 3 innings then held on to salvage a game in their series with Tulane 7-6.

UCONN run ruled UCF in Orlando 10-0, called after 7.

Houston saved faced with 2 in 7th and 2 more in the 8th to salvage the 3rd game at Memphis 4-3.

                            ECU 6-0
                            UCONN 4-2
                            Tulane 2-1
                            WSU 2-1
                            Memphis 3-3
                            Cincinnati 3-3
                            Houston 2-4
                            UCF 1-5
                            USF 1-5
