Paul Suellentrop's Fall Baseball Wrap Up (Shockwaves)

Stephenson listed six pitchers in the mix for starting spots – Josh Smith, Albert Minnis, Mitch Moorman, Zach Beringer, Kris Gardner and A.J. Ladwig.

Nice mix with 3 righties and 3 lefties. My guess is Josh Smith (L), Mitch Mormann (R), Albert Minnis (L) and Zach Beringer (R) will make up our starting rotation with Kris Gardner (L) and A.J. Ladwig available for spot starts and middle relief.

Also available for middle relief would be TJ McGreevey (R), Drew Rainey (L), Foster Vielock (R), Aaron LaBrie (L), Kyle Vail (L), and Kyle Bouman (L).

Cale Elam will be the primary closer with perhaps closer by committee to backup Cale.

That's 13 guys which should be plenty enough depth. Oher possibilities include freshmen Conner Knight, Tyler Baker, Dillon Kerans and Derek Haas. Not sure what the deal is with Derek Haas as he is not listed on the roster but he was effective in his 4 FWS innings allowing no hits but he did walk 4. Of course, that is a very minimal sample size. Kerans was not effective in the FWS. I would not expect too many innings out of this group.

Tobin Matechick remains a big question mark as to whether or not how he will come back from his surgery. But I think we have enough depth that we don't need to rush Tobin.

I don't thinks we will be able to overpower teams with our offensive attack so the pitching staff, as is usually the case will be the key to a successful season. Need to back them up with improved defense this year. I expect Walker Davidson to be steadier defensively at SS than Tyler Grimes was last year, but we also may give up quite a bit offensively in that position. Seems like 3B is there for Erik Harbutz to lose. Obviously, the drop off at the catching position looks like it will be substantial. Defensively we look to be very solid in the outfield. Remains to be seen how much offensive production we will get there. Kevin Hall had a very strong FWS. Don Lambert was OK. Micah Green struggled at the plate going 5-27 (.185) but the guy has all kinds of athletic ability. Garret Baylif's comeback from his leg and ankle surgeries remains a question mark.

As discussed in a prior thread the roster has to be pared down to 35 players prior to the first official practice next spring.

The roster on goShockers.com currently lists 35 players and my guess is that, while not yet set in stone, this will more than likely be our 35-man roster for the upcoming season.

Casey Gillaspie hit over .400 in the fall, he also hit a HR over the 390 mark in cf. He and Coy have the potential to give us some power in the line up. Tyler Coughenour should also hit a lot better this year. If Kevin Hall (hit great in fall ball), Donnie Lambert, Micah Green and Walker Davidson can all improve their hitting over last year, our hitting might actually be better this year.

Replacing OB and Grimes bats will be tough, but I think if the other returning players improve it won't be a problem.

One of the things that I really liked from the fall, was the speed of the new guys. The new guys (except for Casey Gillaspie) will need some time before they start hitting well at the division 1 level, but there is a lot of potential there.

I liked the look of Josh Halbert he hit over .375 with 0 errors at second he should get a shot at short he hit better than Dayne or Walker and they made a lot of errors. I think he has a good arm and range to play there. Anybody else see that?
First a Baseball fan then a Volleyball fan and then I guess I follow the basketball team.

He did look pretty solid at 2B and you just wonder if Walker will ever hit much.

I like Davidson as a late inning replacement more than anything else.He doesn't hit a lick but I'll give him his due with the glove.
