Also, everybody "sick of the program" take a chill pill. Game 2 of the season isn't even over yet
21 innings, 1 run against average (at best) competition. My heart tells me it was just one of those days. My mind tells me Oh, Oh!

We are only 2 games in....but there are some frightening things I saw last night. 1) A total of 16 K's to 5 Walks, our leadoff hitter going 1-10 with no walks and 4 K's..but more importantly striking out on 3 pitches looking in his 1st AB. 2) All the errors coming from the middle infield and catcher positions. I would guess in the next couple weeks, we will see plenty of different combinations to try to find the best one at 2b and ss. I may be wrong, but have we ever platooned the catcher position? To me, it's like rotating QB's...every once in a while it works, but for the most part it causes a mess and hurts both players. Other than Labrie, I was pleasantly suprised at the pitching. Elam is ridiculous, and Smith and Minnis did exactly what we needed them to. I don't understand the lack of agressiveness on the basepaths. 1st couple games out, take some chances and force the other team to make plays.
The great thing about baseball is that today is a new day. Let's hope they can pull out a W today...they need it.

1 freakin' run in their first 21 innings of play? Unless they just come out today and suddenly turn it on and score 10 plus runs, this problem along with all the others is just going to continue to snowball. WE ARE NO LONGER AN ELITE program.

Random game notes:
*I'll accept a little blame for the outcome - I was on barbecue detail outside right field with some Texas State football players (alumni) that volunteered to grill and feed all of the teams. After watching one of the wives putting woman-sized portions on the plates of the first couple Santa Clara players that came through the line (and the disappointed hungry looks on their faces that only a man could understand), I suggested that she might be more comfortable dishing the green beans or salad. And I loaded them up. If I'd known they were going to use that protein against the Shocks later, I would have changed the portions. (kidding - everything else aside, the kids from Santa Clara and U La La were quality people)
*Too many stranded runners - that was the theme of the day, apparently. Texas State stranded 3 and 2 with one out in back to back extra innings in the game before.
*We were talking about it before the first game while the Shocks were waiting and waiting and waiting for the first game to end - does that affect performance? They got to the park approximately 3 hours before they took the field due to extra innings in the previous game. Consensus among our group was that that kind of wait would sap the adrenalin/energy of football and basketball players that get amped up to play, but that baseball players must be used to it due to the nature of the game.
*I took a couple breaks from my beers - uh, I mean barbecuing - and stepped into the right field area to watch the extra innings of the Texas State-Santa Clara game. After a couple extra innings ended with stranded runners, Stephenson looked at me, smiled, and just shook his head.
*Shocker fans made an impression on traveling well. People commented and made me proud.
*I'm not a baseball guy and from a basketball standpoint I've always thought the "All-Airport Team" comments were a veiled insult about a team looking the part without actually being able to get it done on the court. But for what it's worth, comments were made in our group about how big the Shocks looked. And one of those comments was from a 6'8" guy that played in the NFL. I don't have the first idea whether they're a good or bad baseball team, but they pass the eye test.
*On that note - one of the most physically impressive plays I've ever seen in any area of athletics was 6'8" Johnny Coy going horizontal, 2 feet off the ground, to stab a frozen rope that would have broken the game open. You can tell he was a basketball player - very mobile. Hard to tell he was that tall until he stood next to other guys.
*Texas State guys asked me how WSU's stadium compared to Texas State's (they're pretty proud of the amount of money they've spent upgrading facilities, and they should be - the football stadium is going to be really nice and the baseball stadium is good). I had to be diplomatic. Chalk another one up to people discounting us for not knowing anything about Wichita. But they know now.
*None of us could believe that they actually played that second game - I don't pretend to know how logistics work on stuff like that, but it sure would have been better to shift games to today (sunny) or tomorrow (probably the same).
*Watched most of the first game with a player parent. His son was offered by another major baseball school and talked about how the fan support was a big positive. I won't pretend to know or opine on the status of the program, but it reflected well to me.
*I don't know how old Stephenson is, but I hope I'm as mobile as he is when I'm that age. Although we were slightly amused at him walking off the field after each inning - I commented that he looked like he was heading for the OK corral
*And last but not least - WHO IS THE %^&*ing BATGIRL?!?!?! Everybody in the stands was talking about her, and she owes me a new pair of boots that I ruined by spilling my coffee on them when I saw her for the first time. Somebody suggested that Texas State provided her, but my buddy was quick to jump in and say "uh, no, that's not ours - if it were, she'd be in our dugout". Reminded me of the KU basketball traveling managers over the years. Apologies to Coach Stephenson if I'm talking about his granddaughter or one of the players if it's their girlfriend but... keep in mind that there's a PM function on this board, honey!
*Bottom line - I was doubly proud to be a Wichita State follower yesterday. I won't pretend to know anything about baseball or the program, but I got close look at players from the other 3 teams and can comfortably say the Shocks are physically superior. Hopefully they turn it around and the large number of freshmen and sophomores on the team provide a base to turn things around like Murry-Stutz-Kyles did a few years ago.
