  • FWS Game 3: Gold 10 - Black 1

Gold romped over the Black last night 10-1 to take a 3-0 lead in the series.

Kris Gardner had his second straight strong outing giving up one run in 6 IP. That's the only run he's surrendered in 11 innings in the series, so he's put himself in the conversation for third starter with Minnis, who got no help from his defense (5 errors) in taking the loss.

Mikel Mucha looks like he weighs about 145 lb soaking wet, but had a great game, going 3 for 3 with two triples and a double and 3 runs scored. In one nice sequence he was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a sac, stole third, then scored when Sam Hall's throw back to the mound got away from Minnis. Needless to say -- the kid can run a little bit. One of the triples was a shot to straightaway center that burned Taylor Doggett. (Hall likely would've made the catch.)

Kevin Hall continued his nice series, going 1 for 4 but with a sac bunt and 2 RBI, driving in Mucha from third both times.

Casey Gillaspie got his first hit of the series on the last AB of Game 2, then ripped two more singles last night. Looks great at the plate.

Don Lambert also had a nice game with 2 hits, 2 walks and 2 RBI.

Aaron LaBrie had a good outing, throwing 3 innings with one hit and no runs allowed.

    Lowlights:

Taylor Doggett got a slow jump on Mucha's shot that was played into a triple. Then he dropped a two-out sinking liner off the bat of Gillaspie. That drop led to two unearned runs on a Hege single and Walker Davidson throwing error that ended up in the Gold dugout. It also initiated the first appearance of the redshirt this fall -- a red T-shirt on a hanger with Doggett's #21 taped on the front.

Davidson later booted a grounder from Coughenour then rushed a throw to first that ended up in the Black dugout.

A.J. Ladwig continued to struggle, giving up 5 hits and 4 runs (2 earned) in 2 2/3 IP. In two outings this fall he's given up 9 hits, 7 runs (4 ER) in 6 2/3 IP. He does have a live arm though and should figure in the equation this spring.

“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

You beat me to the punch by a minute plus sounds like you attended the game so you would have better perspective than I so I deleted the thread I started.

Mikel Mucha is skinny but he can run and he might give Gene something to think about in left. Perhaps platooning with Mucha starting against RHP and Micah Green against LHP.

Kris Gardner does not appear overpowing but he does seem to be able to get guys out.

Albert Minnis did strike out 7 (vs 1 BB) in his 5 innings so he must have had decent stuff. He is tough when he stays down in the zone.

Walker Davidson made 3 errors last night at SS. He made 3 errors all of last season at 2B. Looks like he had 1 fielding error and 2 throwing errors with the fielding error and 1 throwing happening on the same play. I guess the question about Walker at SS is does he have a SS arm.

    Thanks for the report Wuzee.

The depth chart could get quite a bit more competitive in the fall if Garrett Bayliiff and Erik Harbutz can get back to or close to 100% and play well.

Hopefully, their rehab work goes well and they are ready to go in the fall.

On the pitching side Tobin Mateychick is a wild card depending on how successfully he can rehab.

Or perhaps another question is who else can (reliably) play there? As we all know at this point, that was a weak area for us defensively last season and can ill afford a repeat of that. Is there a better alternative?

That is the question isn't it. At this point not sure I see any unless they want to move Walker back to 2nd and put Tyler Coughenour at SS. But based on what we are seeing the FWS Gene doesn't seem to be predisposed to that.

Dayne Parker has 4 errors in 4 FWS games (2 fielding, 2 throwing) and I just don't think he is quite as slick with the glove or quite has the range that Walker has.

Perhaps the 3 error game by Walker was just one of those days.

The big question marks in my mind continue to be 3rd base and Catcher.

Dayne could be in the running at 3rd base along with Aaron Rea and Sam Hall as will Erik Harbutz assuming he recovers fully from his injury.

The Catching position though looks to be our area of biggest need and biggest uncertainty at this point.
