  • 2019 Schedule

Some opponent 2019 schedules are coming out now. Here's what's known so far. Traditionally, WSU is the last team to release its baseball schedule.

    April 12-14 Houston
    April 18-20 UCF
“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

Thanks. I think I might wander down there. I hear the February weather is pretty good.

The 2019 schedule has been released.

                    https://goshockers.com/news/2018/12/...-schedule.aspx

Looks like a reasonably decent schedule.

My initial reaction is that it's a little tougher schedule than last year overall.

Stephen F. Austin (2), UTSA (2) and Omaha (1) weren't very good last year.

Rhode Island (3) was 24-27 last year. This record included two close losses to Texas A&M 4-1 and 4-3, a 3-2 loss to Florida, a 6-5 win and a 3-2 loss to a good Stetson team and a 4-3 mid-week win over UConn.

A 3-game home series with Bethune-Cookman might seem like pad the stats time but like Rhode Island they had their moments last year. A couple of pretty close games with Stetson losing 0-2 and 4-7, loss to South Florida 3-5 in a mdi-week game and they were swept by the Miami Hurricanes losing 2-4, 7-8 and 11-12.

So that's 11 games the Shocks should do well in although I'm not sure this Shocker team can afford to take any of these opponents for granted this year.

Like you said, URI was better than their record indicates. They had a down year by their standards. More often than not, UCONN, Bryant, and URI are the top 3 teams in New England every year.

Ok schedule given the strength of the American. Not top heavy, but our league is tough enough.

There's a stretch in midseason we'll have to make hay so to speak, when we play Rhode Island X3 (106), KUx1 (93), Memphis X3 (192), Omaha X1 (284), Kansas State X1 (131), Bethune Cookman X3 (195) all at home before traveling to Lawrence to play KU X1 (93) and New Orleans for Tulane X3 (86). That's 16 incredibly winnable games in a row, 12 of which are at home. And if you can win at least 4 of 6 against Memphis and Tulane then you almost assure that you will make the American tournament.

On the positive side only 3 games played at Eck Stadium prior to March 12th and 12 games played in spots south of Wichita. 4 in Phoenix, 4 in Arlington, 3 in Lubbock and 1 in Stillwater.

Last year the Shocks played 10 home games, 3 in Lake Charles, LA and 1 in Tulsa prior to March 12th. Then followed that up with a single game at Missouri and then a 3-game road trip to Creighton in Omaha.

This year from March 12 through March 31 the Shocks play 13 in a row at home then we have 8 in a row at home from April 10th to April 23rd starting with a mid-week game with Oklahoma State, followed by AAC series against Houston and UCF and capped of with a mid-week game against Oklahoma.

The AAC was nice enough to let the Shocks close the AAC regulars season at USF in Tampa so they can just hang around for a couple days before the AAC Tournament starts across the bay in Clearwater (assuming the Shocks qualify).

If someone is picking up the tab, that's an incredibly nice 11 days. Clearwater is a beautiful area.

IIRC last year we weren't really sure what to think of the Shockers prior to the start of AAC play. The Shocks were 18-4 with their best showings a 2-1 series win over a somewhat down Nebraska team and a 2-1 win over Oklahoma with everything else questionable in terms of a measuring stick.

I think we may have a lot better handle on that this year heading into conference play. The opening 4-game tournament in Phoenix presents decent to really good opponents, plus the OSU game in Stillwater, the game at home against ORU and the 3-game series against Texas Tech will provide a good barometer for the Shocks. Certainly not expecting an 82% winning percentage heading into AAC play this year.
