Shocks in Summer Ball 2018

Most of the Shocker pitchers, as they did last summer, will stay in Wichita and lift weights to give their arms a rest. Butler liked the focus on strength and conditioning and believes the break cuts down on injury.

Looks like Alex Jackson is playing for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs in the Florida League. I think he is playing his 1st game with them tonight. He is playing shortstop and hitting in the lead off spot. Alex was 1-4 plus 2 walks and scored 2 runs but looks like his team might need some help in the bullpen. The gave up 10 runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th and lost 14-7.

Noah Croft is with the Kenosha Kingfish in the Northwoods

Jacob Lindemann is with the Lakeshore Chinnooks in the Northwoods.

Bryce McDermott will catch with the Clearwater Outlaws of the KCL.

Jake Plastiak, who was drafted, is slated for the Northwest Indiana Oilmen of the Midwest Collegiate League.

Alex Segal and Preston Snavely will pitch for the Anchorage Bucs

Garrett Kocis will pitch and be a utility player for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots.

Hunter Gibson will pitch and play INF; and Ross Cadena will catch for the Upper Valley Nighthawks of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Here is the "Official" list of summer assignments at least as of now.

Looks like Wuzee had them all except Paxton Wallace who will be playing for the Wilmington Sharks in the Coastal Plains League.

All-in-all I would say those are pretty good assignments although we didn't get anyone placed in the Cape this year.

Of the 12 Shocker returners that were assigned to summer teams only 7 have seen action as far as I can tell. I do not see where Jake Katzfey, Ross Cadena, Hunter Gibson, Alex Segal or Preston Snavely have seen action. Could be those guys have decided not to play this summer or maybe they just wanted to take some down time some down time but it's been a couple of weeks now since summer assignments were announced. Who knows?

Of the 7 Shockers who have seen action Paxton Wallace and Bryce McDermott have the best numbers.

Paxton has been the most active with at least 66 at bats in 16 games for the Wilmington Sharks. He is hitting .295 with 18 hits but has also struck out 18 times vs 5 walks. His OPS is .787.

Bryce has at least 44 at bats in 12 games for the Clearwater Outlaws. He is hitting .359 with 14 hits but has also struck out 17 times vs 5 walks. Bryce has an OPS of 1.125. The big question with Bryce's numbers are how much have to do with him having a good summer and how much has to do with the competition he is seeing. For example, his batting average is 5th best on the team so far this summer. Brye did not play this past season so he was at best 4th on the depth chart at catcher. He will be a redshirt freshman next season.

Luke Ritter is hitting .261 in 12 games with Santa Barbara, Alex Jackson is hitting .265 in 10 games for Winter Park, Garrett Kocis is hitting .222 in 7 games for Anchorage and Noah Croft is hitting .189 in 11 games for Kenosha.

Jacob Lindemann is the only hurler to see action so far this summer. He has 3 starts and 3 relief stints totaling 14.1 innings for Lakeshore in the Northwooods League compliling a ERA of 8.79 with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks. He as given up 25 hits which, when combined with 3 walks, puts his WHIP at 1.95.

Katzfey is still recovering from that horrific injury he suffered in the Memphis series. I'll see if I can find any information on the other guys.

Alex and Preston pitching reasonably well. Alex pitching in relief in all 5 appearance but I think he will be in the mix as a weekend starter for the Shocks.

Ross Cadena off to a good start. I would think that Ross will be in the starting lineup next year somewhere. Hunter Gibson struggling mightily early on.

Update: Paxton started at third. He singled through the right side in his only at bat, but was caught stealing on a blown hit-and-run. He handled two chances at 3B without an error.

Jake Plastiak made the All Star team in his collegiate summer league, a very good sign for an incoming freshman. That he did it as a SS is even more impressive.

Also, Connery Peters was named County POY in Johnson County, Texas, due south of Ft. Worth.

The All-Johnson County pitcher of the year goes to Joshua senior Connery Peters, who’s headed to Wichita State University after bypassing his MLB Draft selection with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Peters went 7-1 with 115 strikeouts against nine earned runs allowed in 74.2 innings for a 0.84 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP ratio.

Jack Sigrist was district MVP and All-Area by DMN

The 6-6A district MVP posted a .379 batting average with a .481 on-base percentage and a .609 slugging percentage. Sigrist had double the amount of walks (26) as he did strikeouts (13). The Wichita State signee scored 26 runs and had 17 RBIs.

Luke Ritter has heated up with Santa Barbara after a somewhat slow start including a 5-5 night in his last game including hitting for the cycle as he had 2 singles, a double, a triple, a home run and a walk in 6 at bats with 6 RBI and 3 runs scored. His average is now up to .322 with the Foresters.
