  • Shox v Trees Game 2

Let's see if the guys can build off that tough game last night.

Missouri State takes game 2 against the Braves despite scratching out only 5 hits. Bradley had a runner on 3rd in 2 of the last 3 innings but couldn't get the tying run home either time.

Bradley seems to have some pretty decent pitching.

CU and Evansville are under way, finishing last night's game 1. Tied at 0 in the 5th. Illinois State jumps out 2-0 in the first on the Salukis.

Trees jump out 1-0 on a homer in the 1st.

A leadoff walk is turned into a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play.

    1-0 Trees into the 3rd.

Bunt single, bunt sacrifice, single and hit batter has the Shocks in all kinds of trouble in the top of the 3rd.

      Bases loaded, 1 down.

Sac fly makes it 2-0 going to the bottom of the 3rd.

Creighton leads Evansville 1-0 bottom 8.

Illinois State leads SIU 4-2 in the bottom of the 1st.

          This team.......... :-x

Micah Green gets a leadoff bunt single, then gets picked off before Davidson can get him to 2nd.

          Then Walker strikes out.

          Sigh..... :(

4 strikeouts, 1 caught stealing and 1 pickoff in 9 outs. Unacceptable.

          2-0 Trees in the 4th.

By contrast the trees have 2 sac bunts, 1 sac fly, a stolen base and now a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 4th.

Shocks have to cash in here. O'Brien singles, advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch.

But no, the 6th strike out and a ground out and we'll go to the 5th, down 3-0.

CU and Evansville tied at 1 in the 10th.

                And...

So, Doc, how much of this is Gene's fault?

Speaking of unacceptable, you can add Brian Flynn to your list. A two-out RBI single by a .220 hitter to build the lead? If Gene complained about this, our carping, Stephenson-hating whiners would accuse him of throwing Flynn under the bus, so I'll do it for him. Flynn needs to step up, because right now he isn't getting it done, and he isn't earning his position. Period, exclamation point -- and if anyone doesn't like my saying so, I hereby, and with the greatest respect and cordiality, invite him to go bleep himself.

Enough of this waste of time for me.

From my seat this team has no fire.

The problems are bigger than this 1 game. I think even the least skilled of us can tell that the players in the program just aren't all that good.

But why does practically every team out execute the Shocks? Even when we win, often we execute poorly.

I think we have to come to grips (if we haven't already) with the reality that one way or the other, this program, with all it's success, history and resources, is VASTLY under performing, has been doing so for years, is headed in the wrong direction, and even when compared to programs with FAR FAR FAR less resources, is just competing slightly over average.

I agree, the players aren't playing that well. But at some point, you have to hold someone responsible. And I'm sorry if the bar has been set really high by Gene.....it might not be fair, but like it or not, this is a business, and a bunch of thousand Wichita State alumni and fans are bigger than Gene and his staff.

I certainly hoped this day would never come....I was there on the flatbeds watching the Shocks through a chain link fence as a kid. Gene gave WSU their only National Championship. Some of my fondest memories of WSU are related to Eck Stadium and Tyler Field. I think Brent is a genius and I'd pay to hear him speak anytime of the day or night.

But this storied program, one of the very best of the last 35 years in college baseball, deserves to, at a minimum, go down fighting. Something they aren't doing right now. And the current staff appears to have no fight left in them.

By the way, I don't hate Gene at all. I think we need to erect statues of him. He is one of the greats in the history of the game, and deserves a big place in the history of this city.

But it's time...in fact it's way past time.

Evansville leaves the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th.

Top of the 11th still tied at 1.

Shocks still getting pasted down 6-0 but it's really a lot worse than that.

Creighton and Evansville now in the 12th. Wanna bet CU wins by properly executing some simple baseball play?

2 on, 1 out after 2 batters walked, and the next 2 Shockers see a total of 4 pitches before bringing the inning to an end.

At this point, it would almost be merciful to end this debacle with a run rule.

How in the world an AWFUL team like Indiana State can completely shut down a WSU team over 2 days defies logic.
