  • Shox vs. Salukis

Shox have a big conference series this weekend at Carbondale. The Salukis are one of the teams one game ahead of the Shox in the standings.

The Salukis also took 2 games from Creighton in Omaha this past weekend (the third game went to extra innings).

Just a reminder, Friday's game starts at 3 pm. If you wait until 6:30 to turn on your radio you will miss the game.

    GO SHOX!

Stolen from the newspaper in Carbondale:

Maldonado takes on former team today in series opener

CARBONDALE - Cameron Maldonado pitched in eight games with Wichita State's defense behind him, but will have a bit of a different situation with the Shockers today.

Maldonado, a junior transfer from Seward (Kan.) Community College, is expected to take the hill as Southern Illinois University's ace against his former team with first place in the Missouri Valley Conference on the line. Maldonado started six games as a true freshman for the Shockers in 2009, but left after chipping a bone in his throwing shoulder. In search of more innings, he went the junior college route, and now has a chance to help the Salukis get a leg up in the three-game series.

"To get that first win, I'm going to do my part," Maldonado said. "The team's going to play great. I just hope I can do my part to help the team."

SIU (15-25, 6-3 MVC) and the Shockers (26-18, 5-4) open alumni weekend and a big series at 3 p.m. today at Abe Martin Field, weather permitting. More than 80 former players were scheduled to take part in a golf scramble in Carterville today, and more than 100 are expected on The Hill for Saturday's Game 2.

The Salukis hope to rise above those distractions and stay in the hunt for their first Valley title since 1990. SIU begins the weekend tied with Creighton (28-10, 6-3) and Missouri State (24-15, 6-3) for the Valley lead. The Bluejays open a three-game home series with last-place Bradley (20-19, 2-7) today, while the Bears are at sixth-place Evansville (22-15, 3-6).

Maldonado has won two of his last three decisions since opening the year 1-4. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-hander set a career high with 10 strikeouts last weekend at Creighton in a no-decision and will be looking for his first home win of the season. Maldonado is 3-5 with a 5.94 ERA on the year, but 0-2 with a 10.50 ERA in three starts in Carbondale.

"I'm just going to approach it like any other game, and stuff like that," Maldonado said. "Go out there and let it go, and have some fun."

The Shockers will counter with one of three projected weekend left-handed starters, junior Charlie Lowell (7-4, 32.9 ERA). Lowell leads the Valley with 85 strikeouts, and is 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA in conference play.
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

Cu has Bradley which means they have a good probability of sweeping and at the very least taking 2 of 3. Wsu needs to keep pace to hold their own destiny in their hands. Wsu can't afford a bad road series now.

Anybody want to predict what type of game Maldonado will have against the program who got rid of him?

Since he gave up over a run an inning pitching for the Shockers, I would assume that he will throw a perfect game against them today.

Tim Kelley done throwing for a matter of "weeks" at this point per Shane.

Has decided he needs to rest and treat with the anti-inflammatory meds for an "extended" period.

Not sure exactly what this means 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 6 weeks.

We've got 3 weeks left in the regular season.

It means his arm is not getting any better (and probably needs surgery, but they will try everything else before this last resort) and he is done for the season for wsu.

Shocks get 3 but have left 5 on in just 2 innings.

3-0 is a good start though.

Charley is throwing a ton of pitches also. At this rate he won't make it past 5 innings.

A one out error by Grimes followed by a single and wild pitch.

After a K, SIU gets a 2 out double to cut the lead to 3-2.

More unearned crap. It does seem that Charlie is laboring a bit.
