  • Shocks vs Redbirds - Round 1

Looks like Charlie Lowell will move into the lead starting role tonight against the Redbirds, with Brian Flynn going on Saturday and Josh Smith on Sunday:

    Probable Pitching Matchups:

    April 22 — Charlie Lowell (LHP, 6-4, 3.53) vs. Corey Maines (RHP, 7-0, 1.95)
    April 23 — Brian Flynn (LHP, 3-1, 4.67) vs. Dan Savas (RHP, 3-1, 3.41)
    April 24 — Josh Smith (LHP, 4-2, 3.45) vs. JD Learnard (RHP, 3-2, 4.30)

I think this is probably a good move. Charlie has been lights-out in his past two starts and Brian is also coming on lately.

Charlie will have to be on his game tonight facing-off against an unbeaten Corey Maines. Opponents are hitting only 0.190 vs Maines this year. Now that Tim Kelley is on the shelf Maines is probably the current front-runner for MVC Pitcher of the Year.

If you like high-scoring games tonight may not be the game for you.

It wasn't the prettiest thing in the world but the Shocks made the plays and pitches when they needed to.

Both teams scored early and both had numerous scoring opportunities thereafter but neither could come up with the key hit until Johnny Coy unloaded with his 3-run bomb in the 7th to put the Shocks up 5-1.

Seemed like Charlie Lowell was in trouble in just about every inning and somehow managed to keep the Redbirds at bay. Cale struggled and escpaed in the 8th with the help of a very good fielding play he made and with an absolutely oustanding glove save of a wild pitch by Chris that allowed him to pick off a Redbird runner straying too far off of 2nd.

In the 9th Cale was nails mowing down Tokarski, Hinshaw and Court at the top of the order. Makes me wonder if he was properly warmed up when he came into the game in the 8th.

Shocks still making a few too many mistakes but for tonight at least they were able to pick each other up and overcome them.

And you simply will not get many evenings weather-wise as nice as tonight this time of year.

        A very entertaining game.

Cale's problem was mechanical. He was leaving everything up, and after a visit from Brent, it was all good.

Great battling by Charlie. He pitched a gem.

You know, I can almost live with the dropped ball by Tyler....some throwing errors etc.....

What I can't live with.....being out-hustled. Playing to not lose. Weak swings. Swinging at balls and looking at strikes.

I thought we were lucky tonight. I thought ISU played harder and with more focus. We got one big hit.

I don't want to discount that the kids won....they made more plays.

But that game was very close to being 6-1 the other way.

Btw, it's time for some upgrades at the Eck.....we need a first class team to raise first class money, and we need it now.

              2nd game of the year.

Great night for baseball.. Coy with the big hit. O'Brien with a key throw-out.

              Good win.

Yeah, I wasn't real pleased with Chris' lack of hustle on the 2-out pop fly that the Redbird's RF dropped and I thought Micah was pretty nonchalant on a ground ball single to left and allowed the Redbird runner on 1st to make it to 3rd without a play. OTOH, Don busted it pretty good on his 8th inning double.

                We got one big hit.
Maybe two. Preston's double in the 1st down the left field line was the key to putting up the 2-runs early (and that on an 0-2 count, usually the specialty of the Shocker pitchers). Maybe three. Chris O'Brien's 1-out ground rule double in the 7th was a key in setting up the intentional walk of Springer and giving Johnny the opportunity for his heroics.

However, I agree the final score is not indicative of how tense and on a razor's edge the game actually was.

A pretty exciting game and some great weather to watch it in. The Redbirds kept getting guys on base and Charlie kept pitching his way out of each inning.

A true blue collar effort. Johnny Coy came through with the big hit when we needed it. OB, Springer and Coy are becoming that dangerous murderers row that pitchers should fear.

Corey Maine is a very good pitcher, Charlie outdueled him tonight. And Cale Elam came through with 2 good innings of relief.

A fun game to watch. Shox got 11 hits off one of the best pitchers in the Valley. In fact, every Shocker got at least one hit off of the guy.

Charlie also pitched a whale of a game. He was pitching out of trouble all night but he managed to do it.

Creighton won tonight in 10 innings 5-4 at home against SIU. Too bad SIU couldn't pull that one out. CU stays in first place in the Valley with a 6-1 record. The box score lists the attendance at 10, 814.

CU also saluted their 1991 CWS Team last night in their new rented stadium.

I wonder if they talked about the Shockers OWNING them that year?

The greatest team in the history of BJ baseball lost 8, yes fans, 8 games to the Shockers that season highlighted by two loses in the CWS and of course one of the greatest plays in Shocker history,

What a bunch of scum, we will see if they are contenders or pretenders in a few weeks.
