Bad
Not a good outcome or a good way to achieve it. Kelley was ineffective -- shouldn't five runs be enough against these guys, much less seven? -- and the defense failed once again. How many games is this team's defense going to lose?
By the way, if anyone wants to point a finger at someone on offense, just aim at the biggest target: Coy is hitting .255 with a total of eight extra base hits in 26 games (all doubles), for a rousing slugging percentage of .327. His on-base percentage is .312 (by comparison, Grimes leads the team with an outstanding .531). Those aren't starter's numbers at any position, especially a power hitter's position. JC needs to step it up big, because right now he frankly isn't earning his job.

Watching Springer kills me. He has a good game (like last night), then 2 or 3 bad ones. He strikes out too much, lets good pitches go by and swings in desperation when behind in the count. He strikes out more than he walks and has almost double strikeouts to extra base hits. .314 for a D1 college 3-hole hitter is not acceptable.
Coy is really struggling. His production at the end of last season was very good, but he is doing right now what he did early last year, namely pulling off garbage breaking stuff outside the strikezone. His numbers across the board are pitiful.
These guys are all capable, and O'Brien is having his best season as a Shocker. The other two, are too far below last year's production to blame on the new bats.
Something must be done about the complete lack of offensive production by the outfielders. Hall hits the ball in the air 60-70% of the time, and refuses to stop trying to pull pitches. He completely negates his speed with bad ABs. The outfield corners are an offensive joke. Cumulative BA of available outfielders other than Hall can't be much over .200. From outfielders?
What started out as a good defensive team has completely gone into the toilet. The left side of the infield has committed 20 of the team's 39 errors. Grimes, the current lead-off hitter, leads the planet in BB and HBP, but he is also leading the team in E and K.
The pitching has mostly been pretty good. One inning blow-ups often aided by defensive misplays seem to be their bug-a-boo. The Shox are scoring so little the pitchers have to be nearly perfect. There have been 6 shutouts, and that's what it takes sometimes to win.
I hate ragging on individuals, but I do not like the direction this team is headed and the individuals are going to have to do something themselves to right this ship. Conference play starts next weekend and not winning the piss-poor MVC would be an embarrasment.
Sorry to everyone's moms and girlfriends, but what we're watching right now is most definitely NOT Shocker baseball ... or is it?

Hall, Coy, Springer, and O'Brien need to step it up, it's their jobs.
But this year the hitting of this team has went from average and skipped mediocre and is just bad.
The bigger problem when you have a team Slugging less than OBP (0.380 vs 0.384). For reference a good hitting team will have Avg/OBP/Slug of 0.300/0.400/0.500 (e.g. 2004 Shockers 0.324/0.418/0.508 or even last year team of 0.296/0.387/0.470 isn't terrible).
A bottom half of the lineup that is around the mendoza line - that is not mediocre that is terrible.
Supposebly your best hitter is batting 0.255 (Coy) with a slugging of 0.327.
Gene said yesterday in the pre-game show that good hitter swing a good pitch, bad hitters swing at bad pitches and this team swings at bad pitches.

Correct. 34 K's in the last 3 games is just plain awful. The Shox are now 10 and 9 in their last 19 games which consists of average to above average teams. I do not think any of the teams we have played in this 19 game stretch are among the elite. This should tell you how good the team is.
We are darn near the halfway point of the season and the team is either not as good as we thought they were going to be, or they have yet to hit mid-season form yet and are going to be late bloomers. I'm hoping for the latter but all indications lean toward the former.
Let's face it. The Shox are perhaps marginally better than last season, the defense continues to stink, the hitting is about the same and the pitching is slightly better in the pen. But lately the pitching has digressed.
If the Shox can win the next three in Hawaii and show some signs of life, I truly believe it will give the team the much needed mental boost to get over the hump.

I'm not sure it is good enough just to win the next 3, but we need to win these games while playing good, solid baseball and not win just because Hawaii plays worse than we do.
BTW 2 more games on the Albert Minnis' suspension. Anyone know if he made this trip?
