  • Eck Stadium playing surface

After watching us play 6 games at home I was convinced our infield D was going to be one of the best in the nation.I still think it can be if we play all of our games at home.I wasn't in Dallas this weekend but I'm a bit concerned about our D on a real surface. My question is,does playing on an almost perfect synthetic infield hurt our IF D on the road? After hearing Shane describe the action this weekend I feel that is a real problem we will have to deal with from here on out.Thoughts?

I wondered about that a little last year. These guys take hundreds of ground balls and now with the indoor IF available, they can do infield reps virtually all the time. The consistency of the surface of artificial turf is obvious: no clods, worn patches, divots, grass clumps, etc.

The thing is, it has been that way for a long time at WSU and I'll bet the the old carpet-like surface was even more true.

Certainly, you get used to playing on your home surface, but it works both ways. Teams who play on grass have to adjust to the speed and bounces of the artificial surface and that is just part of the home field advantage. Many colleges, especially upper tier ones in harsher climates have gone to artificial due to lower maintenance costs and playability in bad weather.

The Shox will just have to adjust like always.

I think that there is a difference in play between some turf infields versus grass....

The chopped ball seems to bounce higher and the low screamer comes up faster.

A team that I watch has only three teams in conference that have a turf infield...when they play on the turf, they move infielders back.

I don't know about consistancy, I would suspect that the expected bounce is more reliable on turf.
