  • SIU shuttering their tennis program

Here's an opinion piece in their student paper that references WSU.

It’s Southern Illinois University Carbondale sports quiz time. Question:  What do the following sports Division I universities have in common:  American, Boston, Bradley, California State (Long Beach, Fullerton and Northridge), California (Santa Barbara and Riverside), DePaul, Marquette, St. Louis and Wisconsin (Milwaukee)? Answer:  They are among the more than 60 quality institutions of higher education...

These cuts will come at the end of this Spring semester.

Valley Men's Tennis will be down to 3 teams plus Stony Brook. Wichita State, Illinois State and Drake.

On the Women's side their are now 7 Valley teams plus Stony Brook. Only Loyola and Indiana State (and now SIU) will not have Women's Tennis.

One thing about college tennis these days is that it is dominated by foreign players. Some of these schools may just find it impossible to recruit internationally in order to fill a representative team.

Of course, Men's Tennis, as with other non-revenue Men's sports, will always be under pressure from Title IX issues especially at schools playing football.

I don't think too many people will miss the tennis programs at SIU. The Valley already had too few Men's Tennis teams to qualify for an automatic NCAA bid without combining with the few American East schools that have Men's Tennis programs.

Clearly football is a much higher profile sport than tennis. Whether the tremendous cost justifies the purported benefits of maintaining football is a decision each school has to determine for itself. But unlikely many will ever arrive at such a desision without significant differences of opinion.

After these cuts SIU will continue to particiapte in 14 Valley Championships plus Missouri Valley Conference Football. WSU participates in 15 Valley Championships but not in football. Also, the MVC Football Conference is one of the best, if not, the best FCS conference in the country for whatever that is worth. How long FCS football will remain braodly viable is anybody's guess.
