I think I related this story about Coach Smith a while back but its a neat story. My uncle was in the first class at the Air Force Academy. Dean Smith and Pepper Rogers played a game of golf to see who would have to be the golf coach. Dean wound up being the coach because presumably he lost. My uncle was/is a golfer and after the season Coach Smith approached him and said he was going to keep team statistics for the mens JV basketball team. My uncle was a math major and liked doing things like that anyway. He said Coach Smith developed his four corner offense at the AFA due to the fact that all he had were short white guys. My uncle said they used it in a game at New Mexico and the crowd wanted to lynch them all. As they years passed they still stayed in contact and actually would play golf from time to time. My uncle said he was a much better Basketball Coach and a golfer. But the same could be said about my uncle in that he was a much better golfer than a basketball coach.
