They probably think it would help as it would be a major financial adjustment to BcS schools whereas a school like WSU, that doesn't have that anyway, wouldn't have to figure out how to change things in order to keep programs up.

Exactly. It's not that it helps WSU directly, it just hurts the BCS schools more. Many of them basically use their football TV contracts to subsidize the rest of their athletic programs, including basketball.

However, I'm not sure that football's demise would be sudden. My theory is that as more and more parents refuse to let their children play football, or as kids themselves have less desire to participate, the talent stream would slowly dry up at the high school level first, then slowly at the college level as it becomes harder to recruit from high schools. Finally, over a generation or two, the pros would be impacted. Anyway, I can't see the decline being so rapid as to make it impossible for the BCS programs to adjust their budgets and their programs to compensate.
