  • Jans Getting Paid

ESPN - Sources: Mississippi State invests in hoops, extends coach Jans

Mississippi State has extended the contract of coach Chris Jans through the 2027-28 season and given him a pay raise that starts at $1 million per year, sources told ESPN.

Jans will make $4.2 million in base salary next season, bumping him from $3.2 million last year. That raise will put among Jans the top half of SEC basketball coaches. The deal includes pay increases and performance incentives, per sources.

Jans has led Mississippi State to back-to-back NCAA tournaments in his two seasons in Starkville, winning 21 games in both of his seasons. He's 42-27 overall and the back-to-back NCAA appearances are the school's first since reaching the 2008 and 2009 NCAA tournaments.

The school extended and bumped up Jans' salary to ride that momentum and show the school is significantly invested in basketball. MSU has gone 8-10 in the SEC in both of Jans' seasons, which culminated with losses to Pittsburgh in the First Four of the NCAA tournament in 2023 and to No. 9 seed Michigan State in the 2024 NCAA tournament. Jans' teams combined for three SEC tournament wins during his two seasons there.

Darron Boatright is a ****ing idiot who held onto his job way longer than he deserved.

The story of Darron needs to be enshrined in the shocker HOF as a cautionary tale.

I'm not here to defend Boatright in general, but if you had to fire Marshall because of the ridiculousness that the media was running around with, you couldn't in a million years hire Jans to replace him.

Meh. The only people who would have been bothered would have been people who have zero investment into our program. We need to stop worrying about the opinions of people who couldn’t give two craps about helping us when we have to regroup.

Oh, and did you notice how quickly the folks in Las Cruces dropped their worries about Chris?

You're missing the point. People were bothered enough to get Marshall fired. Those same people absolutely would've been bothered by hiring Jans immediately after.

I'm not saying I liked Boatright as AD, OR that I agree with either firing Marshall or not hiring Jans. I'm just dealing in reality.

You’re talking about ******* again. Nothings been said about Jans at Mississippi State. You’re searching for a problem that didn’t exist here at Wichita State or most places.

It was not just Darron’s decision to hire or not. Jans was not going to be hired with everything that previously “allegedly” happened with both Marshall and Jans. I am not saying I agree or disagree with this decision, but that was what transpired.

There is no evidence for your claims that Jans reputation was equal to Marshall. I’m not even sure about Marshall’s, but DB obviously hated them both

Of the three, which one had been publicly reprimanded by the NCAA for their actions at the NCAA Tournament?

I didn’t say his reputation was equal to Marshall’s. But there were question marks about his demeanor and behavior. I am not sure about Marshall’s either. That is why I said allegedly.

So give us your evidence that DB was told to not hire Jans, or is it just a hunch that you feel.

                          1) Marshall could have been rehabbed with the right leadership in place several years before the $hit hit the fan.

                          2) There was no way to "rehab" Boatright. You can't fix stupid.

                          3) With a Prez who gave a rat's ass about athletics, Boatright gets fired and Marshall gets rehabbed

                          4) The money guys probably stay on board if Jans had been hired.

When admin whiffs on 4 different ways to salvage the athletic department., we end up in the mess athletics is in now. A lot of incompetence was required to nearly bankrupt the athletic department and tank the basketball program, but that level of incompetence existed in those making the decisions.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

What evidence do you want? Not a hunch. Per conversations with people that are in the know. You don’t have to believe me, that is on you if you don’t. Again I am not saying I agree or disagree with what went down. My opinions don’t matter.

Your friends/decision makers (who knows but maybe you had a hand in it too) can take the blame for Shocker basketball (maybe athletics) going into the toilet.
