Interesting, but more interesting is the fact that Cleo Littleton had graduated (1955) before Wilt arrived in Lawrence in Lawrence (1956)... or that Linwood Sexton had been a football star 10 years before that...Kansas is Flat. The Earth is Not!!

This. These people weren't interested in segregating the flagship of the state but they were smart enough to recognize that they were getting left behind because the game was a changin and it wasn't ever goiing back to the "Phog" days of glory.
