ESPN - Seth Towns enters portal ahead of 8th college hoops season

A familiar name appeared in the NCAA transfer portal Monday night: Seth Towns, the former Ivy League Player of the Year who has missed four of the past five seasons with injuries.

Towns, who will be 26 years old at the start of the next college basketball season, hasn't played since 2020-21.
    .....
While next season will be his eighth in college basketball, Towns could have up to two years of eligibility remaining -- depending on how many years he qualified for a medical redshirt. He has played only three total seasons at Harvard and Ohio State, and one was 2020-21, which the NCAA considers to be the COVID-impacted campaign.
I could have put this in the portal thread, but felt it was a unique situation that deserved its own place. It's crazy that he could still have two years left to play if his body holds up.

He’s still younger than Williams of Memphis, isn’t he?

Williams began his college career at Evansville in '19.

Towns began his college career at Harvard in '16.

I'm going to guess Towns is older.

Williams was born on October 4, 1996, so he probably redshirted Kindergarten twice.

Then he has one year on Towns who was born November 5, 1997.

Hard to believe he was 23 before he ever played a college game? Is that right? I'm really sleepy today and may not be processing at a normal level. That's crazy though if accurate.

Guess Towns is the 2nd oldest. But he might have two years left. Pretty sure this is the final go for Williams.

They have nothing on Ken Mink.

Ken Paul Mink (born 1935) is an American who, at the age of 73, is believed to be the oldest person ever to score in a college basketball game. Mink sank two free throws for Roane State Community College (in Harriman, Tennessee) in their game against King College on November 3, 2008.

I knew I should have specified D1 as there are always oddities at lower levels.

Bernard James was born Feb 7, 1985 and went to Florida State from 2010 - 2012 after serving 6 years in the Air Force. That would have made him 27 while in college. He was the oldest player to be drafted in the NBA at 27 years 148 days old.

ESPN - Seth Towns committing to Howard for eighth hoops season

Seth Towns, the former Ivy League Player of the Year who has missed four of the past five seasons with injuries, announced Friday that he will attend Howard for his eighth season of college basketball.

Towns made his decision known in a post on social media, writing that he was "so blessed."

Towns, who will be 26 years old at the start of the next college basketball season, hasn't played since 2020-21. He told The Columbus Dispatch on Friday that he has changed his outlook on basketball.

"I think I have restructured my relationship with basketball," Towns told the newspaper. "It is much healthier now. I'm not saying I put my entire identity into basketball, but man, it was hard, because that's kind of the only professional aspiration I've had. Everything else was kind of subsidiary to that. Now I think I've released myself from the need to play at whatever level."
