FCC Approves Plan to Regulate Internet

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday approved a plan to regulate the Internet despite warnings that it could strangle industry investment and damage an economy that is still struggling to recover.

The 3-2 vote fell along partisan lines with Democrats capitalizing on their numerical advantage.

The FCC's action "is not motivated by a tangible competitive harm or market failure," said Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker, a Republican, who said she couldn't support the rule because the agency was intervening to regulate the Internet "because it wants to, not because it needs to."

We are talking about usage of miles of infrastructure over multiple jurisdictions using bandwith spectrum in which the parties agreed to fcc oversight when it was purchased, controlled for the most part by regional monopolies. How is this different than your electric company. Imagine westar signing contracts to deliver power preferrentially to largest contract customers at the expense of small business. If anything the fcc didn't go far enough.

No one because all the players had agreed to net neutrality. Once those agreements started getting negotiated away then the cops had to come out. Following your ill logic we wouldn't need a navy as none of us had been harmed by seaborne invasion.

Exactly where and when did internet providers EVER agree to oversight by the FCC?

The internet is a great example of what can happen when the free market is unimpeded by government.

The marketplace is a far, far better regulator than five unelected members of the FCC or 535 members of Congress for that matter.

Clearly the FCC does not have authority to do this. It will either be overturned by a court or Congress will specify that FCC doesn't have the power to regulate the internet.

My understanding is that they can negotiate power contracts only to the limit that they can provide for their existing customers.

AT&T, Comcast and Verizon wrote the rules that FCC adopted. It will do the exact opposite of what "net neutrality" implies.

The FCC Should Not Regulate the Internet

The arguments against government regulation in the name of “net neutrality” have not changed: A good engineering principle is not made better if dogmatized and given to lawyers and bureaucrats to enforce as law. The FCC and its regulatory regime are almost sure to be captured by major ISPs and turned to their benefit, used to suppress competition and blunt innovation.

A premise of net neutrality regulation—and much other regulation—is that consumers can’t be relied on to defend their own interests. Taking that premise, which I don’t, it follows that regulators must step in. But that syllogism skips over an additional premise: that regulators can do a better job.
