  • Expect your tax preperation bill to cost more this year

Just got the notice in the mail the other day - the IRS is now charging each preparer $60 to have a preparer ID (they used to be free).

Guess who gets to pay that? :good:

Well - now you will have a new federal oversignt program of preparers - aren't you happy?

Never had a problem preparing my own taxes. In college I did taxes for a lot of other students. Or I'd offer to go back and redo their taxes from years back if they wanted to split whatever extra money I got them. My best haul was an additional $1500 refund for a guy....I felt bad taking $750 so I just charged him $300. Heck even had students' parents bringing me their taxes. Still do my own taxes today, my wife and I each own our own businesses on top of my regular job and other investments. I'm not too concerned H&R block is paying a $60 fee.

There was a recent law that prohibits preparers from sending your return overseas for preperation (it used to be done a fair amount). Now you have to give specific permission.

Btw - the only reason I brought up the $60 thing is that a lot of businesses used to hire a bunch of seasonal staff for the tax season. Now they may may cut back a bit.

Also, it does hurt the small preparer who may only do a handful of returns.

I believe a small preparer doesnt need a tax preparer id but must sign with his ss#

You are correct there - however using the SSN is not wise. The letter didn't say anything about that - hmm.
