I'm thinking that if the threat can be verified wouldn't this be grounds to have US agencies (if they aren't already) utilize covert ops to "eliminate" those that would target US citizens as well as law enforcement types?

The US agencies probably want Arpaio dead, as well. They might even be underwriting the bounty!

It's all part of Obama's promise to "do more".

The problem with eliminating them is that it will NOT do any good. You have to shut down the cash flow into these cartels or they will just keep reloading.

If you start using predators to eliminate the leadership of the Cartels then it will make a difference. First, they will be thinking more about their own survival than assinating a sherrif, 2nd their attention will be diverted to filling the voids in their leadership. This has been a proven tactic. It worked after Munich when Israel assinated every PLO/arab leader they could locate who was involve in planning or financing. It has been working for them against Hezbollah. It has worked against AQ. If you want to win the war you take the battle to them.

Right now they are living in impunity because they have bought off the police and military south of the border.
