  • Palin the Palm Reader?

The right's political genius can't seem to remember the key points on which she supposedly stands so she has to write them on the palm of her hand. She is the quintessential hypocrite after berating Obama for using a teleprompter. Wow!!!

"As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border." --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Sept. 24, 2008

"All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years." --Sarah Palin, unable to name a single newspaper or magazine she reads, interview with Katie Couric, CBS News, Oct. 1, 2008

"Well, let's see. There's ― of course in the great history of America there have been rulings that there's never going to be absolute consensus by every American, and there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So, you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but ―" --Sarah Palin, unable to name a Supreme Court decision she disagreed with other than Roe vs. Wade, interview with Katie Couric, CBS News, Oct. 1, 2008

"We believe that the best of America is not all in Washington, D.C. ... We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation." --Sarah Palin, speaking at a fundraiser in Greensoboro, N.C., Oct. 16, 2008

"[T]hey're in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom." --Sarah Palin, getting the vice president's constitutional role wrong after being asked by a third grader what the vice president does, interview with NBC affiliate KUSA in Colorado, Oct. 21, 2008

"Who calls a shot like that? Who makes a decision like that? It's a disturbing trend." –Sarah Palin, pushing a conspiracy theory that "In God We Trust" had been moved to the edge of coins by the Obama administration (the change was made by the Bush administration in 2007 and was later reversed by Congress, before Obama took office), West Allis, Wisconsin, Nov. 6, 2009

"Ohh, good, thank you, yes." --Sarah Palin, after a notorious Canadian prank caller complimented her on the documentary about her life, Hustler's "Nailin Paylin," Nov. 1, 2008

"They are also building schools for the Afghan children so that there is hope and opportunity in our neighboring country of Afghanistan." --Sarah Palin, speaking at a fundraiser in San Francisco, Oct. 5, 2008

"I think on a national level your Department of Law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we've been charged with and automatically throw them out." --Sarah Palin, referring to a department that does not exist while attempting to explain why as president she wouldn't be subjected to the same ethics investigations that compelled her to resign as governor of Alaska, ABC News interview, July 7, 2009

      Then, of course there's Bushy:

Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country...

Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream.

I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family.

I hear there's rumors on the Internets that we're going to have a draft.

I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.

You work three jobs? … Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that.

      They misunderestimated me.

Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?

Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.

There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.

You know, I think I have figured out your modus operandi (which is sadly not unique – so don’t get too excited). More often than not when you attempt to tackle any issue in the public sphere (WSU basketball aside) you do three things: (1) Pretend that those who have a contrary opinion do not have a thoughtful argument; (2) offer no argument of your own; and (3) proceed to demean your opponent(s). The foregoing makes it easy for you to actually avoid thinking.

Moving on – I don’t really understand why it is such a huge deal that Palin scribbled a few notes on the palm of her hand which I believe read “Lift America’s spirits”, “Energy”, “Taxes” and, there was something else – I don’t recall. Even so, that is some cheat sheet.

I understand that it's a sort of "turnabout is fair play" from people that must be very annoyed by now at all the prompter jokes. That is fine but they are missing the point. A prompter feeds your remarks to you word for word. The idea that you would need such a device to talk to a room full of sixth graders or a meeting of your own staff is funny.

On another level, the prompter jokes took off because they reinforce the substantive argument that Obama is in over his head, because they indicate that he can't perform the the presidency's basic public-speaking duties without a major safety net. I'm not sure what substantive argument Palin's hand-notes are supposed to underline, and I suspect it's not an argument so much as an attitude. The attitude would be that writing on your hand is dumb and low-class. This, fair or not, is a common opinion of Palin in some quarters and anything which reinforces it will be cheerfully noted. And, to the extent that anyone not on the left notices this giddy snobbery, it will play to Palin's strengths.

For example, one might say: "Unlike the guy who needs a three thousand dollar teleprompter to get out of bed in the morning, Palin speaks from concise notes like everybody else. And, like other busy moms, she sometimes writes notes on her hand."

The comeback is so obvious that, again, I really can't figure out why Palin's detractors are bringing this up at all.

I believe it was pronounced: "Corpseman". Twice. Perhaps on “Cinco de Cuatro” he could take a quick vacation to our “57th state” and learn the “Austrian” language.

This could be done all day – to any politician.

From what I heard on some of the news shows, they didn't have any problem with her using index cards to jot things down. But putting something on your hand is usually something you do because you don't want people to know about it.

I don't think there would have been any news on this is she would have went the index card route.

So you posted this because she wrote on her hand instead of a piece of paper? Seriously?

Is there an able-bodied Corpseman in the house? We need a teleprompter so that Barack H(ypocrite) Obama can read this for us:

When times are tough, you — you tighten your belts. You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.

What's wrong with the quote about not blowing your money? I think that should be common sense. I guess not to the righties after the spending spree Bushy put us through for eight years.

                      Hypocrisy is hypocrisy.

I know you feel real cool getting your big boy pants on in the Political forum, mixing it up with other likeminded Teabaggers in your one-sided intellectual tug of war you got going on here, but please, allow me to interject.

If Palin has the balls to call a President out for doing what public speakers have been doing since the technology was invented, Presidents included, she probably shouldn't have used a hillbilly teleprompter herself. You think?

Of course people like WuDrWu don't have the mental juice to understand the bigger picture. When you level criticism at a President for using a teleprompter, what you are really saying is "If the issues are so important to you, why can't you remember them without outside aid?" Hence the hypocricy.

But lets get back to the teleprompter issue, less I lose you in all this deep thought. A teleprompter feeds you every word? Must it? A teleprompter can just as well give you an outline or a few key bulletpoints.

Have you ever used a teleprompter before? Let me ask you this. Is there a clear difference between a teleprompter and a written speech on a podium? Is there much a difference between a teleprompter and a powerpoint presentation? Is there a difference between an actual teleprompter and notes on a hand? Maybe. Maybe not.

The funniest thing about this debate is that you Teabaggers are attacking one area where most logical people can agree Obama is the strongest: public speaking. It's like you can't even get your act together over which talking point makes sense and which one doesn't.

Or is your argument that teleprompters inherently make someone a great speaker? Dubya misreading from his time and time again should tell you that's a dead end.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

A telemprompter is no different than a written speech except for the fact that it looks better and it is easier to use.
