Count another one in. Gary Johnson, the former two-term Republican governor of New Mexico, is launching his new Our America PAC, an obvious stepping stone to launching a run for president. Next time around, the “Ron Paul revolution” will have a new candidate, one that will promise sweeping libertarian change and that has executive experience and a persona more marketable than the squeaky-voiced self-proclaimed “defender of the Constitution.”

Change Candidate for 2012?

From what I've read Johnson was a true small-government, libertarian conservative as governor of New Mexico. He vetoed quite a bit of legislation that crossed his desk. I've had him on my radar as a potential 2012 "liberty" candidate.
He won the election 50%-40% in a state that where registered Democrats have a 2-to-1 majority. He was re-elected in 1998 by a 55%-45% vote.
As a former governor he should have some name recognition. I'm not sure if he posesses the charisma a lot of people look for but if McCain can get the nomination then it must not be a prerequisite anymore.
From his Wiki:
Under Johnson's administration, New Mexico experienced the longest period without a tax increase in the state's history, the rate of growth in the state government was cut in half, half of the state's prisons were privatized, state Medicaid was shifted to managed care, and the state was left with approximately 1,000 fewer employees (with no firings) and a budget surplus. Johnson vetoed 750 bills (which was more than all the vetoes of the other 49 Governors in the country at that time, combined), which earned him the nickname Gary "Veto" Johnson.
