  • TED TALK: A Conservative Plea - let's work together

    Arthur Brooks on TED

Conservatives and liberals both believe that they alone are motivated by love while their opponents are motivated by hate. How can we solve problems with so much polarization? In this talk, social scientist Arthur Brooks shares ideas for what we can each do as individuals to break the gridlock. "We might just be able to take the ghastly holy war of ideology that we're suffering under and turn it into a competition of ideas," he says.

    I absolutely love this!

Globalization - open borders and no welfare state
    Free trade - less tariffs.
Rule of law - stop pulling cops out ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Decrease relative poverty
Property rights - we are actually pretty good here
    Entrepreneurship - less regulations

End result is less poverty...which is down 80% since 1970 and 50% since 2000.

It's interesting that I, my church denomination, and many other church's are giving (my denomination is spending hundreds of millions of dollars) lots of monies for nothing in return to help the poor (that he was talking about), improving farming practices, growing food, improving water sources, running orphanages for children with aids, education, and other self sustaining practices in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world for the worlds poor. One hears about a Bill Gates foundation but they don't publicize the work of countless missionaries who give selflessly to the worlds poor. If you have never met any of these missionaries, you should. While they are imperfect humans too, the ones I know are extraordinary people. They spread the good news of self reliance and hope in too many ways to mention here. With all denominations, I would expect the money to help the needy would be in the billions of dollars.
