The new state law allowing those 21 and over to carry a concealed firearm on college campuses in Kansas is now in action.

This is a controversial topic in college athletics as other states are implementing similar laws.

I wanted to get some of your thoughts on how you think this might impact the WSU athletic department. Perhaps parents of potential recruits will be apprehensive about sending their child to a place with firearms increasingly visible.

I think one softball player in 2023 will choose another school because of this.

That's about the extent of impact I see this having.

Since guns will be allowed on campus, but not inside CKA during athletic events, be ready for metal detectors, people emptying their change, taking off their belts, even removing their glasses to get into the building for a game. It will be similar to entering the courthouse. Might also mean fewer open entry gates. They might have only the ticket office entry open.

I don't know how they're going to handle the smokers who go out when they come back in. That entry will have to be secured.

My main concern is for professors when a student thinks they got a bad grade they didn't deserve. Students get a little crazy around finals time, and I hear some of them consume alcohol.

So a drunk, agitated college student who wouldn't bring a gun to class and shoot his professor because it was illegal, will, now do so because the law changed?

I doubt it.

This might result in fewer knives carried by students. Hope most are smart enough not to bring a knife to a gun-fight

Do you really think there were no guns on campus prior to this law? There were guns in dorms, lots of guns in cars, and even some people carrying them before this law was passed. So the difference is that now it is legal.

The real question is the one JH4P asked. How many people that chose not to illegally bring a gun on campus will now legally bring a gun on campus to commit a crime? I would say very few, if any. The real issue is the one Aargh raised. Making them legal on some parts of campus but banning them at other campus locations creates a huge cost and inconvenience issue. Seems like it might have made more sense to leave existing policies in place but decriminalize carrying a firearm unless it is used to commit a crime.

There's a logical thought pattern that runs like this:

If it's illegal to have a gun on campus, I will leave my gun at home.

If it's legal to have a gun on campus, I will take my gun with me. In fact, I better take it with me because of all the other people who will have theirs with them.

Will the shopping list for students going away to college now include a Glock? "Mom, you better buy me a gun".

There will be increased opportunities for errors and for "heat of the moment" bad decisions. It only takes a few seconds for a decent, law-abiding, armed citizen to become a criminal.

Geez...what a disappointment. I saw "New State Law" in the basketball forum and thought it might actually have something to do with basketball. Yah, I actually had a momentarily lapse of judgment and imagined it might be "that kind" of law.

Questions... does Virginia Tech result in 33 deaths if concealed carry is in place? How many "heat of the moment" incidents will occur? How many incidents will be stopped in progress, or prevented altogether by the disincentive of knowing that many other concealed guns will be present?

I don't know the firm answers to those questions. Nobody knows precisely, but I would be interested what the net results might be, not just what unique scenarios might increase or decrease.

...and related to basketball, I'm still firmly convinced that this law will have virtually zero impact on getting recruits to come here.

Well can you tell me how many recruits did not go to a Utah school citing campus carry as the reason ? I mean it's only been legal there for over a decade.

I saw and appreciated that. It's a very valid point. I just had illusions that maybe someone in the government may again be forcing people to discuss the possibility of making the Shocks play Johnson County Correctional College on a regular basis.
