For those who don't know what Apple Carplay or Android Carplay - it basically the integration of your phone with your car info-system. Apple carplay is the state of the art at the moment, but there is lesser variations(some from auto manufactures). My truck has apple siri eyes free. That means that my phone phone connects through the bluetooth and I can take and make calls via Siri. I also can send and receive texts via siri voice commands. Also my music/podcast integrate into the system. I also can receive verbal turn by turn through whatever GPS app I'm using on my phone via the radio.

Apple car play takes the next step in the integration. I don't have that so maybe somebody who has it can give some information on what they like or don't like.

But Apple Car plays does the following:

MAPS from your phone is integrated - so you no longer have to purchase GPS component for your car and the maps are of course updated as you keep your phone updated.

Phone, Imessage, music is supported similar to Siri eyes free, but also integrates an interface. The other thing is Apps also can be used for streaming different services like MLB, CBS Radio, NPR, Audible books, spotify, etc.

With CarPlay, get directions, play music, and more on your car’s built-in display. And use digital car keys to unlock and start your car with iPhone.

What apple car play (and I assume android) does is really get car manufactures out of having to develop info-systems that are generally clunky and in some cases are just bad. I would expect in the future that you would see increased integration with you car like controlling heat/ac.
